Jailbreaking an iPhone 3g

So I've had my Iphone nearly a month and a lot of talk on 'Jailbreaking' the phone.

What are the advantages of doing so bar being able to install applications not via the app store?

Do you lose any features when you Jailbreak and any crashing issues in doing so?
