As of 00:01 GMT this Friday, Valve's spectacularly-popular zombie shooter Left 4 Dead will be made free to download over the company's Steam digital delivery service.

Yes, instead of spending $40 on the game, you can spend $0. The catch? The offer's only good for a 24-hour period, and once that 24 hours is up, the "free" game will be locked, and you'll need to pay up to play up.

If your connection is slow and you're worried you'll spend 23 of those 24 hours downloading the game, don't worry, you can pre-load it now and then just flip the switch on Friday morning.

If its true get downloading its a epic game

Well its on steam

:) people who don't have it will need to stay up that server is going to get slammed

Beginning Friday at 12:01 am GMT, the PC version of Left 4 Dead will be available for a free 24-hour trial via Steam. The free trial will include access to the recently released Survival Pack DLC, which introduces a new multiplayer game mode and two additional Versus campaigns. Those who wish to give L4D and the Survival Pack a try may now pre-load everything needed to play with no obligation to purchase.

Hmm maybe just a trial :( still worth the download

Reckon it makes sense; they don't lose anything by giving it away for a day, as anyone who plays it and enjoys it will then buy it.

Good idea really, as good as Steam is, they miss that "demo" experience. If I had a few hours on L4D I would have realised it wasn't quite my cuppa.. That said, I'm sticking at it.

I will be hoping this goes down to the £5.66 like the orange box did. I want it, but its not at the top of my must haves yet.

It has been on the weekend deal twice, I think it went for around £13

Well worth it at that price, I paid £23 on release day and still play it all the time

Wow, this is nice of Steam to do. Shame im not going to be at my pc on friday because im on holiday. :(:o

I havent got L4D yet either, was still unsure whether or not to get it even though i did play the demo of it when it was out. :)

Numerous Final Fantasies for DS
Dead Space
Dreamfall
Ceville
COD5
The Orange Box
I have also borrowed littlebigplanet from someone at work

I have a problem with impulse buying lol

You dont need much time to play l4d me and my mates use to it blow off steam at the end of the time, you can complete a level in 40mins, just blasting everything

Great fun

So you download the game, then for 24 hours on friday you can play it for free, then come Saturday the game becomes locked and if you want to carry on playing you have to pay the going price? Does that about sum it up?

Yeah. It's the same as the TF2/UT3 free weekends but only for one day.

How well might this run on a P4 3ghz, with 2GB RAM and 256 dedicated ATI x600 card? I really want to play this, but didn't like it on the 360.
