A friend of mine has been given a Nikon D90 body and is looking for a walkabout lens. He is not an experienced photographer but wants to make a start.

I know nothing about Nikon, so would be grateful for some views. I'm not sure about his budget, but he is not looking to buy bottom end.

Nikon 18-135mm? I have one and found it to be a pretty decent lens, comes in at around £300

...or used for around £120.

I had this lens for a while and it's a great walkabout/general purpose lens. Nothing special in any way but it's good for the price I paid (£200 new). I upgraded to a fast 17-50mm as the speed was important for me.

Best Image Quality and large zoom range: Nikon 16-85 VRII
As above, but not as good and significantly cheaper: Nikon 18-105 VR.
Best IQ with fast aperture: Tamron 17-50 2.8
