In the last week or so, mine and my wife's cats have caught at least 4 mice between them. I have a nice tidy garden but there are several nests along one side behind concrete-panelled earth retaining 'fences'. They seem to like it there as they inhabited the same place last year, although far fewer in number.

Yesterday my cat got hold of a mouse and ate it whole. There's no way of taking it from him as he just runs off when approached.

So I let him be and forgot about it. A couple of hours later the cat came in and I heard my wife shouting that there was something wrong with my cat. I went down stairs to find the poor little sod meowing away, twitching, staggering and occasionally falling over.

I immediately associated the problem with the mouse he'd eaten and got my wife to call the emergency vet whilst I got the cat carrier out and got the car ready.

Upshot is my cat had to spend a night in the vets on a drip at a cost of £312 (luckily I have pet insurance, but still - there is a £50 excess to pay). He's fine now, just very dopey from sedation and also has a couple of bald patches.

Now knowing that there are could be a load of dying/slow (easy target) poisoned mice around my garden and neighbouring gardens, I'm not sure what to do. Why anyone would use rat poison in such a built up area with so many cats is beyond me. It's the worst method for killing vermin due to the trauma it causes. What's wrong with a proper spring trap? At least they're normally humane. Whoever left the poison out needs a good talking to. Retards.

Anyway, here's my cat on a better day:

Nothing wrong with using poison. People need to keep rodent numbers down. In fact when we had teh council come at UNI they used poison then. it's just one of the many risks involved with owning a pet.

Glad he's fine though.

Rat poison is rather effective. How come your cat eat the rat? mine never seems to be eating it but just playing with it until the rat dies.

They probably don't realise that it can cause a problem. I have to admit, it wouldn't have occurred to me. Maybe put up a few posters in your area to discourage use of rat poison? If your neighbourhood has a lot of cats, I wouldn't have though there'd be much of a rat problem anyway.

It happened to our cat at work, he got into a mouse trap and ate the dead mouse! he seems ok now though.

Sorry to hear about this, I love cats.

People don't trap mice because they don't want to dispose of them. Also, poison is cheaper than buying multiple traps.
People do not care about your cat, or anybody else's.

Same thing happened to my cat recently.

It got into the neighbours shed sometime in the evening, and the stupid lady was too afraid of him to get him out (how you can be afraid of my loving cat is a mystery), so as to not get burgled SHE LOCKS HIM IN THERE OVERNIGHT.

We don't see him for a whole day then he eventually shows up meowing like crazy, obviously in distress. He proceeds to get extremely ill and we take him to the vets. It was clear that he had got his paws on some kind of rat poison or fertiliser while in the shed when the old hag had locked him in. Luckily he made a recovery but was very ill and had to be put on a drip for a couple days.

Makes me sick that people can be so cruel and irresponsible.

I can abide the council using it but it's just stupid to leave it out where there are lots of cats. Fair enough - the person may not know the risk. It was most likely a nearby neighbour as my cat doesn't wander far.

My cat will eat anything including jewelery. He stole the mouse off my wife's cat, the stupid greedy sod.

I'm tempted to do this. I'm considering getting either some proer traps or humane ones to deal with the problem aswell.

.

it's no different to people using it. The poison gets in the rats/mice which are then eaten.

Yes, you're right. What I said didn't make a lot of sense. I'm just surprised it's used in an area where people know there are so many cats. There's at least 6 that I see regularly in my garden apart from my own.

Again though - people may not realise I suppose.

I could make a racist statement here about asians and polish.

id use rat poison if there was a rat problem aswell, thankfully never had any vermin proble or cat problems ie leaving there feaces in my garden etc they are propelled away from my garden by cat/vermin alarms.

who cares about cats if you have rats..... not me.
