Serious Question, why do you play games ?

As a more interactive medium for spending time with friends. Movies and TV are dull because there's no interaction with people, and so I substitute multiplayer gaming instead of films/TV as an interesting way to pass the time without being anti social.

Did I say there was anything wrong with being immersed? I said escape, not immerse.

It sounds like you have problems dealing with the real world. If games are an escape for you, then what are you going to do when you can't game?

You very strongly imply that there's something wrong with what he is doing yes. There really isn't anything wrong with escaping/immersing/whatever into a game/book/film, millions of people do it. Immersion and escaping are pretty much the same thing, they both involve forgetting about reality and enjoying a fictional world, i think you're just looking into his working a little too much.

Well at the age of twelve (before I got heavily into gaming) I used to practise meditation, and later I studied Astral Projection which I also started practising at the age of 13, then as I got older I found gaming an easier form of escapism, which was probably a mistake in hindsight, but if I couldn't 'game' again then I guess I would start meditating again, I suppose in a sense I do have a problem dealing with reality, but then I think many people in modern society are also suffering from the same problem, but at varying degrees (with me being at the higher end of that spectrum).

But like Streeteh said, gaming is just one form of escapism, for another it may be music (which I'm also guilty of), for another, drink, drugs, films, the theatre, etc, we all take 'medicine' in one form or another to rest our minds from the hum drum of life.

When running over old ladies, being serviced by prostitutes, and dealing drugs gets boring I play GTA to pass the time.

I do it to detract from the real world and be able to put my self in situations which I'd never been in normally. It's a way to immerse your self in an different world, taking the role as another person, which is the appeal.

it's a form of entertainment which although I enjoy lots, it's ultimately a stress reliever for me. I can sit at home, after stress from whom, or by whatever, and relax in my own little space and enjoy what ever I am playing.

That's why I play games, in a nutshell.

I game for the stories. That's probably why I'm not that bigger fan of much outside the storybased gaming genre. Sport games don't really interest me due to having no story.

I watch movies, Read and games are another form of story telling.

Robert1986, Why do you see escaping from real life as sign of problems with ones real life. You are over analyzing, and attempting to put a negative spin on things.

I play games because I enjoy them and find them fun. Like watching a film or various other recreational materials. It's as simple as that.

I play games to pass the time. I get bored far too easily watching TV and movies so I spend the majority of my spare time gaming. I prefer online games with a decent community and very rarely play single player games.

I've always been interested in how they work. Making things be able to be controled and "live" in this virtual space. From the start of high school I was making simple games with a mate (Cow and bat, main character was a cow/panda thing who had a sidekick bat that used to act like a boomerang, platformer!) We made around 30 levels for that alone, and had hundreds of stupid little games like that.

Also used to play doom2 (zdoom) over the net a lot with a few mates, constantly modding it etc. I found it fascinating.

Now Im doing it at uni, Loving it. I play the games becuase they are fun, (I went down the competitive css side of things and erugh.) I have a good group of mates to play with.
