hi guys, im up to speed this computer things but as for mobile phones i use an old samsung slide phone and a cheap monthly O2 contract. My contract is up this month and i was looking at mobile broadband on the O2 website and although it gives you details it seems to assume you know a bit about mobile broadband:confused:

as i dont i thought i would ask on here to see if people could shed some light on this for me

can i use mobile broadband anywhere as long as there is some kind of signal ie in the country or at work, basically nothing to do with a wifi hotspot being close by ?

do you get decent download speeds, im not expecting it to be lightning fast as it will be mainly for email and internet browsing.

is the download speed better at home ie is there a modem that you can connect wirelessly to ?

would i be better keeping my sky broadband for when i want to download loadsa big files thru newsgroups ?

anything else you can tell me feel free:D

thanks guys

What is it with people on this forum not being able to use the search, or simply just look down the page for the 3 other topics which pretty much cover the same ****ing thing?

/rant over.

Anyways:

Can I use it everywhere? - Kind of the point isn't it? As long as you have a network signal you can use it, if 3G isn't available it will fall back to GPRS.

Speeds? - Variable, dependant on signal quality and network but generally I find my experience has been very good. (Vodafone)

Better at home?!?! - Not sure what you mean, if I was at home I'd just use my home connection as normal as even under best conditions it will likely be better than the 3G one.

Keep Sky - Yes. Most packages are low usage and as an average offer 3-5Gb/month, so that won't really go far if you download a lot of pornography of watch 5 iPlayer shows a day.

thanks for the rant but i did a wee search and found discussions but nothing answering my basic questions.

so what is it with people on these forums that feel the need to rant becasue they assume someone did not use the search box, well my questions are basic as i know very little about how mobile broadband works so i was hoping nobody would mind me asking some basic questions rather than sifting nthru many topics for ages to find out what i wanted to know, thankfully you found it appropiate to help as well as rant ;)

thanks for the answers, i was unsure if the mobile broadband was seperate from your home broadband i thought maybe it connected to your home modem for a faster speed etc.

3-5gb is fine for me it wont be for porn or streaming video just internet browsing and email as this would be extremely handy for me.

i would keep my sky bb and use it to download movies etc and large files :D

What exactly did you type into the search box? I started a recent thread about the poor download speed of 3g connections.

Anyway, if you live in a 2g area you would be better off on dial up. If you live in a 3g enabled area, you would likely see variable rates almost as good as 1mb in real terms.

I'm on a train at the moment, but that sort of speed is fairly typical of what I get with a reasonable 3G signal.

This is the best I can get in Reading. Was quite good for the first few months but is now totally useless - £35/mth down the drain for the next 15 months !

O2 tell me that being a mobile product, it is not guarenteed to work in any one place and i should move to a location where it does work. They suggested I go to London to use it, or my local McDonalds where I can use wi-fi !

And that is why in my eyes O2 are a terrible network from a data point of view. :)

Never had any issues like that from my provider (nor would I put up with being treated like that), I am a Vodafone Corporate customer and have about two dozen handsets and modems with them now and the service is for the most part faultless.
