Personal Tattoo Idea.

Hi all,

I've just seen the tattoo aftercare thread and this reminded me i was going to ask some oppinions on an idea i have for my next one. mainly, is it too detailed?

Right, here's the background. 6 Years ago my Little sister of 10 years old passed away. Ever since i've wanted to do something in way of rememberance. I've decided to have a tattoo with her name on it. The dragonfly? a short poem was read during the funeral service and it struck a chord with me.

Obviously given the background this HAS to be perfect. The main concern is the wings. Any of you out there with tattoos may be able to give advice?

Contructive advice only please, given the personal Nature.

Looks good,

However, I would omit the name, and have it in a place that is not observable, as you have described it, it would be a personal thing, and IMO should stay that way.

Nice idea though.
 
Where would you get it? Whats your pain threshold like? That design has a LOT of line work. Since this is a single needle this is the one that hurts the most. If you can take a lot of pain then it will be worth it. :)
 
This was one thing that did come up whilst speaking with the girlfriend about it. The name would in most cases cause 2 things - people thinking the GF is called Lauren, or asking "Who is Lauren?" which when told, could be awkward for some people i suppose. the alternatives were, no name, as suggested or a few words "With Love" or something similar.
 
Sash, thinking of getting it on my inner forearm, basically the same place as my current tat. Last time i sat and looked outta the window identifying cars as the drove by! The pain wasnt too bad! could manage with a lot worse i think! The line work in the wings is the main problem. do the needles go that thin?
 
The dragonfly on its own could be a good one to keep the memory alive. Because people will go 'ooh why a dragonfly?'
edit: inner forearm should be fine its areas with 1 not much skin on or 2 too much skin that tend to hurt the most. I had my tattoo on my arm but the part that was done on my shoulder bone and shoulder blade hurt a lot mostly because of the above.

I know, each to their own, but something that painful in my life, I'd like it to be in a place where only people you decide to show it too, see it.

I can see your point. im leaning towards getting just the dragonfly and i can then decide which answer i give if people do ask.

Good luck its always worth asking an actual tattoo artist about the design first though. You will find a lot of pictures arent suitable for tattoos. As you get older your skin changes (every 7 years or something) if you have too many lines that are close together they will merge together or distort. You will need to ask your artist about if they can alter the design so it will look good in years ahead not just day 1 :) put pics up if you decide to get it done mate.

Edit- just noticed your question about needles. Yes the needles can go that thin (not sure how thin it is since i am on the mobile) but the best bet is to take it to the artist like i said above and chat with them about it.

Thanks Sash. As you can imagine, this is quite a big thing. i think going in and speaking to the artist would be the best thing. Ive been working on this for 2 years, so prolonging that process wouldnt be a problem.

When i get it done i will post some snaps.

Yeah the design i got was made as a tribal design but it was my friend who designed it and wasnt a tattoo artist. When i took it in the artist said he would need to amend a bit because some of the dragon claws were too close together. He showed me writing he had on his own tattoo and you could hardly tell what it said because of the way it was designed. A good artist should be able to give you advice. Failing that you could use solid colour for the wings with less lines in it. Makes it easier for everyone. Good luck!
Edit- remember to ask a few different artists before choosing where to get it done try to find people who have been to the places so they can confirm what the artist is like and you can see their previous work. You dont wanna be stuck with a crap looking tattoo after the 2hours of work.
 
Thats true, you need a bonified tattoo artist advice. Ever since I was 14 I wanted a certain artists impression of Cthulhu tattooed on my upper arm, but time after time a tattoo artist has said how hard it will be to transfer such detail from paper to skin.

I will find a compromise soon enough (I hope)

Makes sence i suppose! i had to ask Google about Cthulhu and, yes, it does look quite complex. i think the main thing, as said above is the longevity of the tattoo and not just day one. Compromise? in what way? sacrifice some detail?

You could always get the dragon fly then add the name in later if you decide you want it :)
 
Lots of lines - more pain but more detail. There would be a lot of pressure on the artist to get right. The stencil they use may not be accurate enough to copy.

thats the point, yeah, Detail. Vs. Longevity.

And the fact that I hope I wont go up and down in weight which is a concern, with stretching.

Which I do tend to go up and down in weight.
 
djmc, I hope you do find someone who will do your Tattoo for you.

Hmmmmmmm, putting on weight, not something i've thought of.

It's Never simple!

But it irks me that someone else has it.

I have been constantly redesigning via photoshop trying to better that, but I cant!

And the last thing I want to do is copy someone else.
 
thats quite epic! I know the feeling, ive seen a few things that are just what im looking for and then imidiatly disregarded them, because someone else has it. I found the picture in the OP on a wildlife poster at work (a school) after hours of scouring the internet, the last place i expected to find what i was looking for!
