Will these work together?

Using a second PC, follow this link:

Download the latest BIOS, copy the file onto a memory stick.

Fingers crossed, you may be able to get into the BIOS with your Phenom II. Then just follow the motherboard's manual on how to flash the BIOS from the mem stick.

If it doesn't post, (which it probably won't) you're gonna have to get one of these or similar..

but get one second hand off The Bay.....no point buying it for one turn on!

Ok, thanks for this, this will be handy when my friend wants to buy the two, I'll tell him that, buying a second hand one shouldn't cost too much should it? Considering it's cheap to start with anyway.
 
Also, what are the chances of BIOS flashing failing? And is there a cheap motherboard that could just simply support Phenom II x4?
