Steam account hijacked (again)

Today I got an email saying my contact email address had been changed from Steam, so I then tried to log into my Steam account and low and behold the password has changed too. Knowing I had entered familiar territory again, I promptly went to the Steam support and submitted a ticket - so still waiting for a response.

Right now I am just so annoyed. I have had this account for years, and it has tons of games on it. This has happened once before a few years ago and now it has happened again, I just don't know how I can be even MORE careful. It makes me wonder how these people do it. I know keyloggers etc, are usually what people say are the culprits, but I am very careful with what goes on my PC and I don't download any old rubbish to it.

So, no TF2 for this weekend then. :(

Nope, all my games are pretty much played through steam these days. I don't download addons really from anywhere much. The only addon I downloaded for a game was the cinematic mod for HL2.

there has been fake emails from steam going around normally syaing you have been gifted a game havent clicked on that have you?

if not i think its time to change you email passwords aswell as your steam password

Do you use your steam account login for anything else on the net, such as forums? If so, then if one of them places gets compromised then they can gain access to your steam account without needing any sort of keylogger on your machine.

I'd be well ****ed off if this happened to me!

Luckily I've been fine, although one of my mate's accounts got hijacked a while back.

If your Steam password ressembles any other one of your passwords from somewhere else then that somewhere has been breached through some sort of means (did you log into your email on a mate's computer which was compromised, for instance?), failing that I'd start scanning the computer :)

I didn't get any dodgy emails from anywhere asking me to click on a link, nor did I download anything from any 'fishy' sources.

My Steam account password is totally different from everything else. :)

Just to be on the safe side, I'm gonna format the computer anyway.

I've had a similar problem to this with a wow account.
After I gave up I seem to get emails through once a month saying your wow email address has been changed. If I try and log on to the account management the password has been changed and everything.
I'm not sure what it is. I don't have keyloggers or malware/spyware on my computer, and since i don't log into wow because I don't play it I haven't a clue how people are getting on.

I went to my steam community page, by searching my username and the guy who's hijacked it has started posting abusive comments on their profiles and harrassing my steam friends apparently.

Great. :/

I must say, the whole password change in Steam is apalling. You can have hundreds of pounds worth of games on your account, but you only need the steam password to change all the details. They could at least make it require email confirmation, on the off chance that they don't have access to your email inbox as well. Or even do as blizzard have done with WoW accounts with one of those authenticators. Sure, its a little overkill, but if I have a steam account with £100+ worth of games, I'd be happy to spend £10 to make sure only I can access them.

my thoughts exactly and Its not overkill at all. Most steam accounts are worth way more than a wow account which has much better protection.

Well then in my opinion you weren't hacked by some scipt jockey, this is somebody you know. I don't think a random hacker would give enough of a damn about you as a person to do that sort of thing.

You'd be surprised how pathetic some hackers are.

It definitely isn't somone I know because I don't share my account with anyone.

I'm still waiting for a reply from Steam Support, doubt I'll get one this weekend - probably next week.

Does steam have a security question if you forget your password? If so that could be the back door they're using. Complete guess obviously.

Steam should be at least as protected as accessing your bank account online considering the value of some of the accounts. I hate to think how much money I've spent on games on it. There should be three security questions and a PIN or support for fingerprint readers.

I completely agree, but any threads on the steam forums gets shouted down by the mods, they just keep saying that you shouldn't have given your password out to someone ¬_¬
