Does washing a new pair of jeans make them slightly smaller?

I bet half of the people saying you don't have to wash jeans don't realise that their mum does it for them when they put it in that funny basket. ;)

This is why there are always people wearing ugly looking jeans ;) It's like why you are not suppose to water wash a suit.

rubbish - jeans are designed to be washed with water, they are a heavy duty cotton - you can't damage them.
suits have to be dry cleaned because of the materials they are made of will shrink if water washed (usually wool).

lol how obsessed are some of you about your jeans? Lol does it really make any decent difference if your jeans have been washed and perhaps don't look quite as good as they potentially could?

Usually always wash my jeans until they get marks on them, then they go in the wash. Pretty much ALWAYS wash jeans after i've been on a night out as they get covered in grimness around the bottom!

To some people who care about how they look, yes. Is that too hard to comprehend?

Its teh cheap-skates that do it to "save" money i guess :D

Seems pretty counter-intuitive for someone to care how about they look, yet neglect a fairly significant part of hygiene?
Unless you sweat like a pressure washer, I don't see how your jeans could be so dirty they need a wash after a few days wear.

I don't know about you but I don't actually sweat very much unless I'm exercising in some way, in which case I wouldn't be wearing jeans.

Comparing two pairs of jeans here, one from Route one and the other Uniqlo but both costing the same.

Wearing them most days but washing the route ones at least once a week they lasted 4 months before getting really thin and completely losing their shape/fit.
The Uniqlos have had 2 washes in 4 months and fit better than they did new and will probably last another 6 months of similar use.

Odd that they last such a short length of time or maybe it's me who is odd because my jeans also tend to be washed once a week and they last for years at a time generally. Do you buy fashion/ripped jeans? I'd imagine that could have a serious impact on their ability to withstand wear, I've got a couple of pairs of ripped jeans now but that is because I've worn them to destruction.

I treat my jeans like any other item of outerwear, a few days wear and then chucked in the wash, it might or might not be dirty enough to merit it but it's simpler and means that it should always be clean enough for me.

No, just that they're worn every day (other than when being washed).

It's the equivilent of wearing them once a week for 28 months.

I turn my jeans inside out when I wash them. The problem is some of them are colour dyed so it's the colour washing out, turning them inside out will save it abit.

I get mine from Topman for around £25-£35 a pair. I've had one pair of black jeans which are slightly grey for around 3 years. Another black pair for around 1 year and they're still as black from first purchase.

It's the darker blue colors which fade a lot for me. But some I've had for around 7 months now and are still going strong.

Think I have around 4 pairs of casual jeans which get washed every 2-3 weeks.

Back ontopic :D

I think I had tried shrinking some jeans. 60c wash for 1.30 minutes and a tumble dry did the trick.

@ Raikiri, the problem would be the quality of the jeans.

Some jeans last forever, some do not. I remember buying a pair of Levi's 501's and they started loosing colour in around 5 months. But another pair just like them for £30 I still use :D

Expensive jeans aren't really designed to be worn over and over again. They think we are rich and can just afford to buy a new pair when the new fashion season comes in or whatever.

That's my point...unless people just wear them in a bleeding air tight container with no dirt in it what so ever, how the hell do they not get dirty? :p

I wear my jeans every day for work, I kneel on the ground, the ground is dusty/dirty, i wear them out in the evenings, i goto parties abroad where the ground gets remarkably skabby after 6 hours of drinks being thrown on the floor thus making the jeans dirty.

I wear my jeans and they happen to be near my join area, I used to skate so shock horror I used to sweat.

That is how my jeans got dirty, then needing a wash! :p

And I don't think sticking them on a washing line outside in the breeze is going to keep them clean and fresh ;)

I'm not saying I wash my jeans every couple of days. But my comment was more directed at those who either never wash their jeans, or only do so every couple of months?!

Things have changed a lot since I wore jeans nearly every day ...... today they are a fashion thing, in my day they were used for what they were designed for .... work; and therefore got washed on a weekly basis.
On a side note, I used to throw mine away when they were faded and ripped ...... now they charge you more for them in that condition!!

I've never seen the appeal of buying pre-ripped jeans...Just looks stupid =/...I just make my own holes in them over time :p
