Loving Windows 7 - feels slick and the new task bar is ace. Almost wished I didnt have to go back to Vista for games

EDIT - One gripe, the Windows sound scheme is weird!

After using the RC for a few days now I really do think it is overhyped. In fact te only ting I prefer on it to vista is the library system. But im sure this can be obtained in vista using a 3rd party app.

I have a decent system quad core, 8gb of ram, so maybe the performance differences between vista and 7 are hidden by the specs. Maybe there is a boost from moving to vista to 7 on a lower specced machine.

I just reinstlled vista sp2 and in all honest a clean install of that was more responsive than 7.

All in all then I think its an overhyped piece of marketing genious by MS!

so far the only thing i dont like about W7 is the media player, is there any way to get it to work like the one in vista/xp with the visualisation in the center, the playlist on the right & the controls at the bottom?

I'm liking Windows 7 from what I've seen so far.
Network and sharing centre has somehow been made even worse from Vistas. Why? Why?

Think I'll move to Win7 on the laptop but for the desktop, I can't think of any reason to move from a good Vista 64 install.

Agree with the above Media player annoyance. I actually like Media Player but Win7's just seems to be deliberately cut down and ****.

Really liked the RC my self and the previous builds since build 7000. But I've gone back to Vista x64 with SP2, mainly because I needed something which I know is rock solid and I know in side out as I'm going to be using the machine for various ICT coursework in the next few weeks. Plus there is a few issues with punkbuster, I will most likely wait till the final release to put it on my main machine. But I will be putting the RC on my laptop and update that with any new builds that are available.

But all round I have nothing bad to say, but it did seem the RC was slower on my main machine than the 7068 build I was using before I installed the RC. Hopefully that will be sorted by the final release.

Window7 is just an evolution of Vista as Vista was an evolution of XP. The move from XP to Vista gave a whole host of "under the hood" improvements and gave ther kernel a well needed rewrite.

WIMP GUI's can only now really "evolve", there is only so far you can go with the way we've got used to "interfacing" with computers. Windows7 bring multitouch but obviously very few people have the hardware to take advantage of this new feature.

The real revelation is how well Windows7 runs on "low end" hardware, many people didn't have a upgrade path from XP because Vista was too heavy on system specs. It seems that if it would run XP then it will run Windows 7 and is probably a little "snappier" than XP.

Is it overhyped, probably, after all it's only an OS.

I just reinstlled vista sp2 and in all honest a clean install of that was more responsive than 7.

Sorry but I just can't agree, I've done very similar recently and Windows 7 feels much more responsive than Vista on my rig anyway.

can i confirm that i can run an upgrade from Vista to windows 7 and it will keep all my apps and settings ??

This was from an email i got from Microsoft regarding the RC:

If you’re running Windows Vista, you can install Window 7 RC without having to back up and reinstall your programs and data. But to be on the safe side, please do backup your data before you start.

:)

I've never had thumbnails with MKV files, in XP or Vista, no matter which codec packs i install. I get them with pretty much every other file type, and so mkv's look a bit wierd to say the least.

Just a little niggle i've had for a while that i wish was resolved.

I had them working fine in Vista with the Vista Codec packs, but not MP4s. In 7 MP4s are fine, but not MKVs :p

Still can't get it to accept MPC as the default media player, in program defaults there's no option to change it from WMP.

I did it by going into MPC options and setting it as default for all formats VIDEO wise.

for some reason windows 7 isnt compatible with neverwinter nights 2, its giving me a error when i try to start the game

The public release on Tue 5th is bad timing for us UK users - plenty of spare time over bank holiday weekend, but can't get my hands on it

Looking forward to seeing how RC1 compares to the earlier beta. Like someone else here pointed out, I actually found my Vista installation to be faster than W7 beta. And that is a 2 yr old install of Vista...

To be honest, if you had a geniune reason to try the RC, you would have it already. It's more than freely available.
