Was thinking about splashing it down with water, but wouldn't that make the chain rust?

Just ordered some White Lightning Epic Ride lube today, so I'll use it after.

Yup. People have this ridiculous attitude to WD40, it's an excellent cleaner and pretty decent water disperser (that's what it was designed to do in fact). I always laugh at bike forums who'll go nuts if you admit to using WD40, but love GT85, when it's very close to the same thing (GT85 has PTFE added not because it makes it better, but to avoid infringing the WD40 patent, apparently). It's a horrible lube of course, but that's why you don't use it as a lube.

If you want to get sand or fine grit out of a chain, the best tool is some paraffin (£5 for 4 litres from B&Q, in the greenhouse heaters section) and 2 jars or plastic food tubs. Take chain off bike and hose down to remove surface dirt. Put paraffin in jar, put chain in paraffin, shake shake shake. Then, do the same with the other jar, as the first one will get very dirty and full of sand/dirt.

A good degreaser, some good scrubbing, and some water to rinse.

then just oil it back up and bingo

Also them steam cleaners are good too. I used one on my cassette and it came up sparkly :D
