I'm trying to do up a list of countries that exist today that have been the most "innocent", as in, they haven't started wars or tried invading other countries over the past 400 years.

There are very few neutral countries today. There's the likes of Sweden, but they did awful things to Finland and Norway so I wouldn't consider them at all!

I'm guessing small countries that have gained independence by the skin of their teeth, countries that just wanted to be left alone and in peace. countries that didn't colonise, etc.

My list is Costa Rica, Finland and, hmm.. Malta, are they pretty hip? :p What about Iceland?

My knowledge of history isn't great but I'm hoping to learn a few things from you lot.

India as far as I know. Never invaded. Has been involved in some conflicts over the past 50 years but not sure if it started them.

As for teh whole kashmir issue, depending on who you think started it :p But in history, they never colonised etc. Though you could argue that it was more a collection of states rather than a country and those states invaded each other,m but not outside the 'country'.

Depending on what this is for, you could make an argument for it. If it's something not for an essay etc., then its probably more hassle explaining it than its worth.

Oh and switzerland. Always switzerland :p

Australia has never started a war, though we are frequently invited to join when the other countries are picking their teams.

We invaded Iraq, but only as part of a coalition force.

In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Holly
;)

I'd suggest Luxembourg as a fairly obvious choice for the neutral. What about Portugal?

//edit on actually thinking about it Portugal with their colonies wouldn't be such a good choice at all.

Iceland is a good one. They only have 300,000 population (less than the hull and humber reagion) but my god are all 300,000 of them clever aha. When i went there everything was just so.....sorted. I am absolutley gutted their economy collapsed. They seem to be dealing with it well though. icealdn only has a tiny amount of troops although over a third of the country are available to be called up i beleive. At the moment i think Iceland may have sent their troops into help out in the far east.....which is wierd as i can't see that being too worth while.

Meanwhile the US have a small coastal protection team protecting iceland which i think may be leaving soon actually. So yeah Iceland have been pretty peacefull as far as i know.

Depenindg on what you class as a country Isle of Man is a good one :p. India have that awfull kashmir conflict going on so a big No on that part.

Papau New Guinea is one i just thought off the top of my head

Canada, Lichteinstien (spelt wrong), probably middle east coutries like qatar etc. Could be completely wrong though

Perhaps Ireland, we've mainly been invaded most notably by the Normans and the British. We are involved with the UN in peace keeping missions currently including Chad and Liberia among others but that's not exactly invading.

Finland fought the Soviets twice in World War 2 and the Germans once.

Portugal was neutral in World War 2 and was neutral in World War 1 until 1916 when they seized a number of merchant ships in Lisbon and Germany declared war on them.

Australia has never started a war, though we are frequently invited to join when the other countries are picking their teams.

Through your own choice you have invaded other countries then..

The problem with Australia is that it is mainly a British colony, and they forced the natives to retreat into reserves, and that's not cool. Same with the early States. So Oz is out I'm afraid, plus, it's not neutral.

Portugal colonised a huge part of SA, and a bit of India, and several other places, so no. Poor old Portugal got a raw deal in the end, eh?

India, hmm. Again no. It's such a massive, complicated country. I don't care to delve into the massive Wiki.

I'll check old Luxenburgen and Lichteinstien out, but didn't they form from some pompous royalty? I'll keep it in mind.

Finland for sure, those guys are tough mofos.

Ireland, well I didn't mention it because it's a no-brainer. It's in the list.

Iceland certainly!

Cananda = no. But I do love Canada

OK, so I have Finland, Iceland, Ireland so far. Malta? What's the deal with them?

More suggestions please! :)

As far as "haven't started wars or tried invading other countries over the past 400 years" go - Poland and Czech - they were invaded, annexed, attacked and robbed about every 20 minutes for the past 4 centuries, but as far as declaring wars or invading other countries go I think you'll find nothing more than few short lived uprisings against occupants and that's about it.

Andorra, pfff.

Poland and Czech in the list for sure.

Costa Rica? They're neutral. Are they peaceful. What gives with those guys?

Isles of Scilly are hard buggars. We may be 1,800 strong, but we were one side of one of the longest wars in history
