For anyone who has bodywork repaired...

But the paint is broken, ie there's no paint there so how can you t cut it back?

It's only the top-coat that's scratched. Specialist polishes with fillers will take the top-coat back to the base-coat and then you can make it good with wax again. You'd be surprised what can be done with a rotary polisher and the right polishes.

£200 sounds a lot, i'm not sure what you can do, if you don't want to go through insurance :(

This cost me less than £200 to get repaired!

If you think you are getting robbed go through insurance. A body shop will probably will not do smart repairs hence doing the whole panel/bumper is the only option. Or just give him the £200 and let him spend it on what he likes.

I had the same thing happen...I said get a quote and ring me.....in the end I said just insurance it I'm no longer interested never heard a thing.

Indeed, T-cut won't do it but I would accept any repair that would mask it if at all possible.. I guess the owner of this Pug 106 is pretty fastidious.

My excess is around £200 anyway and I don't want to loose my NCB. Looks like I'm gonna have to beg/ borrow/ steal the money, I'll be paying 'the garage' direct though and asking for an itemised bill.

Expensive mistake... i've never come close to a bump in 2 years of driving and I still need to sort my car which is considerably worse than his. Gutted isn't the word. :(

It's no wonder people do things like this in supermarket car parks and nick off - nobody is reasonable about these things!

he's taking the pee and it's in his interest not to go through insurance either as it will impact on his premium fault or no fault.

I'd pay for the repair, but if he wants it removed and the whole lot done then that's up to him to fund. It may, as said, polish out anyway.

£200 sounds steep but it beats insurance:(

Couple of quid, T-Cut and then a bit of polish should bring that oot.

:/

If it was mine i'm pretty sure I could sort it for a few quid. Touch up paint from Peugeot, wet sand, t-cut and polish... but it's not! You can't blame the guy for wanting it repairing professionally, it wasn't his fault afterall.

Thats a really steep price, Im getting a brand new painted front bumper for my Type R from Honda for 200 , They are going to repaint the front splitter aswell and fit it with the bumper all for a total of 300. Tell him to go through insurance I guarantee he doesnt.

Give him a call and use the old Daniel Craig spiel (Layer Cake)...

You: "Hi mate, lets go though the insurance, do you have my car reg?"
Him: "No i didn't take note of it sorry"
You: "Unlucky"

/hangs up phone and changes number

...seriously though, ask him to get a quote at another body shop, with a printed quotation of parts/labour/total cost etc, take it to another bodyshop and see if they can price match.

He's probably added 100% on to keep himself a few quid.

I feel for you :(

I had the same situation a few weeks back where my workmate pranged my car door into another workmates door. (his car a Hillman Imp)

He was very upset at first and quoted £250, then got a smart repiar done at £40.

Not in a rude way, but its a 106, not exactally a rare car. Its not as if he will be looking with a magnifyer glass everyday looking at the silly scratch (even if fixed with a smart repair). Some people really do need to get a life.

If such damage was done in a private car park he might not be able to claim with insurance.

How was the damage done? Was it an honnest mistake or a bit of "fooling" around? This may also effect they way the guy is acting.

Its amazing how over protective we can be with such material possesions!

What happened to a tenner and a few drinks to sort things out!

It was a totally honest mistake - was reversing down a bank between his car and a wall... was too busy watching the wall and before I looked out my right window I'd already hit it.

I am quite tempted to tell him he's taking the pee. £100 will more than cover that damage, whether it be a smart repair or a respray (I'm sure he could shop around). I'm willing to bet the insurance company won't warrant a £200 payout for a scuff like that.

Being an 'honest mistake' doesn't make it any less of your fault. £200 to respray a bumper sounds 'alright' to me. A girl made an honest mistake and reversed into my 325ci slightly scratching the rear bumper and putting a tiny dent in the rear quarter and a tiny one in the rear panel. The cost of repair was £800 not including the hire car (320d m sport coupe) that I was given for a week.

You made the mistake, if you don't want to pay what he says then go through insurance, he's doing you a favour not the other way round.

Haha, when I nailed the back of someones car a year and a half ago, i put a small ding in his bumper (the size of a screw head, which was what caused the damage), the geezer did it through his insurance and the claim came to £997 in the end! lol What a con!

£200 sounds fair to me my local bodyshop is slightly cheaper at £150 for a full bumper respray however £200 is not over the top for a good job. The car looks like it has been looked after and in good condition. If that happened to my car I would want the bumper removed and resprayed. You have mentioned you were at a car meet so the owner is more than likely a car enthusiast and wants the car in the best possible condition.

I would be greatful he has offered you the chance to pay rather than go through the insurance which will cost you a lot more than £200 over the 3years you need to advise insurance companies of the claim.

In short pay up.

Ask yourself this: If he had done it to your car, would you want the best job you could get? Or would you be happy with the guy who'd done it offering £60...

I think we all know the answer, so pay up, your fault, no excuses - Or go through the Insurance. It's pretty simple.
