well yeah, preferably a game that allows you to tweak/customise your car
ive only played Forza2 & NFS:UG, wasnt really into racing games

ive tried the GRiD demo but that keeps crashing at the load screen :(

thanks!

the pc doesnt have anything that can compete with forza in terms of content.

rFactor is quite good but content is next to none...luckily there are enough mods out there to make it compete with any other pc game in terms of content.

the above 2 i have named are both racing sims.

woops my bad
well any decent racing game tbh, doesnt have to live up to the standards of forza, i found that a bit too realistic imo

Grid is good, shame you can't get the demo working, Also worth a look Colin McRae Dirt, Test drive Unlimited and the latest burnout incarnation is ok for some arcadey action.

If you don't mind rally games...

Old but gold...Richard Burn's Rally will have you customising to your hearts content.

And even older, if you can get hold of the Focus Multimedia XP/Vista re-issue of the classic 1999 Magnetic Fields Rally Championship. It may be ten years old but the graphics still pass muster and you will need to *think* how to not only tune your car but balance repairs so it gets through all 36 stages of the British Rally.

We are well overdue a remake or a new version of the above!

I'm one that likes the more realistic feel and like the way the cars handle on Forza. On the PC I like GT Legends (for old cars) and GTR Evo for modern racing. These are aimed more at simulators in my opinion though I think the settings can be dumbed down a little to make it feel more arcady. I like the challenge of keeping the cars on track and putting in consistant lap times without ABS or Traction control etc. So much more rewarding :D

TOCA RACE DRIVER 3 - STEAM £5.99

A balance of arcade/sim leaning towards arcade with sim elements such has adjusting numerous car settings.

Has a great selection of cars though:

Open wheel racers
Touring cars
Monster trucks
Oval racing
Rallying
Lorry racing

Loads more.

Career mode is massive.

Still has an online community.

Worth a look for £6.

GTREvo + Race07. Great fun online with a nice range of cars ranging from quite hardcore and really needing a steering wheel to doing well down to the Race07's WTCC cars that you could probably drive with a keyboard quite easily :p
£16 on steam iirc.

Am in a similar dilemma.

Have tried quite a few demos in the last week or so, and so far GTR2 seems to be winning - with GTREvo I found the cars 'floaty', GTLegends wouldn't load (shame I think), GRID & Race07 felt arcady.

iRacing, rFactor and LFS great serious sims too (too much so for me atm).

Odd complaint about GTREvo. How would you say it felt floaty? I find it feels much more connected that GTR2 ever did.
What OS are you on - I know the full install of GTL breaks vista due to its DRM (you can get around it though) Maybe the demo shares a somewhat similar problem.

I'd love to still play GTL as much as I used to, but can't get the force feedback working on my G25 as well as I would like, GTREvo+Race07 win by miles for me on FFB.

Side note on the subject of racing games.

Hidden away in my loft somewhere, I have an ancient PS1 racing wheel+Peddles (Came with V-Rally!). So, its over 10 years old, but I'm pretty sure it still works. Would it be possible to pick up a ps1>usb convertor, then be able to use it in games such as Grid? It doesn't do much, but its got to be better than a 360 controler, hasn't it? I'm just not sure if the convertors work with wheels.

Thanks!

I'm on vista.

From the demos GTR2 felt more like Geoff Crammonds GP series, and feels like you have more track to use, and the ability to take odd lines. Although GTREvo had a greater impression of undulating tracks, but the car models seem oddly seperate to the track - can't really word it!. GTR2 feels more complete, with working pit crews and oddly the sound of gravel hitting the car when having a detour through the gravel trap.

Still deciding, but don't mean to hijack the OP's thread.

Yeh there should be a patch for starforce / vista which lets GTL work, as long as you're not on Windows 7 I don't think there's a windows OS where it won't work.

Evo does have better FFB, but I find GTL has a more relaxed / mature demographic.
There are GTL events at RaceDepartment on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays which could always use more people, and a league running on alternating Thursdays starting this Thursday. You don't have to be any good at racing, the only real requirement is having the right attitude :)

Wacky Wheels :D Back in 1994 this was one of the best games ever!

Urm how about looking for an old copy of star wars episode one pod races? (think that was on the pc)

Grids ok, though the f3000 cars are infuriating!

PC isnt really the best platform for racing games though :( (unless you fancy getting a copy of lemans 24 hour to work, that was awesome back on my p2 450)

im thinking about getting a cheap+good wheel, not sure which though
downloading a demo of LFS, so ill see what thts like, im guessing to enjot most racing sims on pc you need a wheel?

I got test drive unlimited, which is pretty awesome, though most of the shops are locked for some reason
