Hi guys, my sister has decided she needs a new PC to play The Sims 3 which is coming soon, as her laptop just won't cut it. I want it as cheap as possible and I know Sims 3 won't have high requirements so no need for expensive stuff.

I don't have much knowledge about budget builds so thanks for any help!

Any help:

Lol, my sister wanted the same thing. That game is going to get so many sisters brand new PCs :D I'll get to work on a spec right away including monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse and Box. Any word on budget would also be awesome.

I like reflux's build. RJC that's a great build for £400 and was on the lines of what I was thinking of but a 4850 is overkill for Sims 3 I think and the CPU cooler isn't really needed for £20. Thanks for the replies and keep em coming :).

Perhaps, but you'll be glad you got it when the Left4Dead expansion for sims 3 comes out!

Or, maybe not - but how sweet would that be?

Oh yeah I forgot to say no need for a monitor or peripherals. I think i'll need an OS though.

siumatfung's looks like the best so far. How does that CPU compare to a Pentium duo?

Oh gods, not again...

Sims 3 is going to be another WOW/Sims 2/Crysis. Every forum filled with requests for computers with the specific requirement that it "Must run Sims 3 really well"...

Not the OP's fault, as it's a fact of life that certain games will attract a crowd, but it's going to be a rough few months...

Anyway, I think a standard build for "basic gaming" would be:

AMD Athlon 7750+
AM2+ compatible m-ATX or ATX motherboard, doesn't need to be expensive.
2GB of DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon 4670/4770/4830 (There is only a few quid difference, so I'd lean towards the lowest priced 4830)
SATA-II Hard Drive with 500GB of space and 32mb cache.
Whatever case your sister likes.
450-550w PSU (depends on the "Will I steal it off her next year and upgrade it?" chance)

You can get the 7750 and an m-ATX board for less than £100 now, so it's an obvious purchase. The list above doesn't include a screen or OS, which should add a hefty lift onto the price (although Ubuntu 9.10 is coming out soon... I liked that OS a lot, but you have to remember that it has two modes - it does absolutely everything you want it to do, but if you wanted it to do MORE... sudo became godlike.)

Make sure you include your sister in the case choice, unless it's a present.

- Huw

EDIT: PS, the build might seem overkill, but that system *will* run Sims 3 at 50+ FPS at all times, and will make a great workstation/movie player.

That psu is a fail :)

tbh only one model of the hiper PSU's seems to be the problem that was the 580W type R i think we should all not be prejudice towards hiper yes i can admit we have a hate group on the forum but we shouldnt just let opinions create such a faff on about hiper PSU's

plus theres not one bad review at all about that PSU
