Windows 7 hits RC stage Build 7100

Doesn't anyone feel that by bundling XP they are admitting defeat with the whole compatibility thing? Also doesn't that mean they're going to have to continue to support XP for much longer?

Just upgraded from a Vista x64 install. Worked well, took about an hour from start to finish.

Runs very nicely! Even from an upgrade. Tempted to re-install though ;)

Right click the shortcut and hit Properties.

Go to the Compatability tab and set it to Vista.

:)

+1 thanks from me too, that was beginning to annoy me aswell.

I installed 7100 x64 on my 2 year old laptop last night and have to say even though its very similar to Vista I do think its a nice improvement.

One thing that really really grated my cheese was how Vista just would randomly choose the icon views in folders, so one moment I would have Properties view, the next it would be the largest image size, really irritating, I am hoping this is sorted now.

Library view appears to be the biggest change I can see so far, as well as the monochrome system tray icons and the new taskbar design which will take a bit of getting used to.

Had no problems really installing my apps, so thats a bonus, will most likely keep this now as my main OS until the retail version comes out.

Yep, get this all the time with Vista, it is a real pain. I'm also forever going "View-Choose Details" because it seems to lose that as well. And "Date" column is often blank, you have to choose "Date Modifed" or similar. Let's see how W7 is.

Yup, it also used to irritate me that "size" and type" or whatever were not default in the properties view, at least 7 does.

Not really. It's only in there because some businesses have custom software that will never run on anything but XP, and including a VM with the Pro/Ultimate editions will help IT departments take their companies off XP. If anything, the introduction of a standardised VM will reduce the amount of support that XP needs.

I have one problem with windows live messenger, i cannot open any chat windows, if i click on a name in my contacts list, i can hover over the icon in the taskbar and preview the chat windows but it will not open on the desktop.

This is really starting to annoy me as have tried uninstalling, repairing etc but nothing works.

Anybody else have this problem?

thanks

I keep getting 500 - Internal server error Grrrr
can some one post the Hash number when they get it please.

Huh, i expected MS's servers would be getting hammered for this, but i'm downloading at 2.0MB/s - only gonna take ~25mins. Looking forward to giving this a try now, hopefully drivers won't cause me problems.

I am managing to download the x86 version but not x64. Getting a 2MB/s+ at the moment. Seems to be climing though! 17mins to go :)

Edit:

The speed seems to climb constantly. 3.3MB and rising! Impressive considering its going to be a busy day at M$.

If you have problems getting the page to load to download it use Internet explorer, Chrome wouldn't load the page for me.

Maxing my connection out at 1.12MB/s on the 32bit.
