My wife and I are planning a trip to Washington later this year and I've been looking into visiting the White House during the trip!
From the website it appears that while I can visit the visitors centre, tours of the actual White House have to be arranged through one's own member of congress (ie. US citizens only!)

Can anyone confirm if its possible for a non-US national (UK) to visit the White House and if so, how would I go about doing it??

Thanks....

Pretty much impossible if you don't have connections

This.

I looked into it when I was over there last April. It appears that you need to have a minimum amount people wanting to go, then you have to get in touch with your local congressman and wait for an answer, a few months at least.

Annoyed me as I wanted to have a look around.

yup, as I thought, from the white house website.

Public tours of the White House are available for groups of 10 or more people. Requests must be submitted through one's Member of Congress and are accepted up to six months in advance. These self-guided tours are available from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday (excluding federal holidays). Tour hours will be extended when possible based on the official White House schedule. Tours are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. We encourage you to submit your request as close to six months in advance as possible since a limited number of tours are available. All White House tours are free of charge. For the most current tour information, please call the 24-hour line at 202-456-7041. Please note that White House tours may be subject to last minute cancellation.

Do you know any Americans?

You can get them to write to thier congressman and reccommend you for a tour,
We are stopping in Washington as part of our honeymoon and a girl from my fiancees work is doing this for us, She has done it before for others, mixed success, but that said i also think she knows the congressman personally.

My Aunt lives in Florida, do you think she would be able to get something sorted for us?? I assumed the "group of 10" was all together rather than just "my group" - surely we'd be OK to join another few people?

although I can see the reason's behind the rules, wouldn't it just be better to search everybody who want's a tour, I'm sure a better system than that could work

How odd! I was watching a documentary on C-SPAN about the White House and I just presumed it was similar to Buckingham Palace - you lined up and got a ticket and were given a guided tour by an official.

Try writing to a Senator from Delaware or Rhode Island. LOL. They are teeny states so they may accept foreigners to make up the numbers. :D

Then if it turns out an entire group of people they let in, because of no background checks at all, are all terrorists, they might not have guns, but 10 guys walking by an armed guard jump him, what are the chances they might get a gun and maybe do something.

Its not the Queen, who realistically has no real power aswell as no deep seeded hate for what she does in "to" the world like Brown/Obama/others have.

Can you get a simple tour of 10 downing street by simply turning up and queuing, or any other proper headquarters for proper leaders.

They should build an exact replica so tourists can walk around it, get the feel, but no danger to the real white house, best of both worlds ;)
