Recomend a cheap car

in my experience with a 306 you get cheaper insurance but pay more for the car. A Xsara will get you a better spec car for the money but you pay more to insure. Since the cars are almost identical this is illogical but hey......

Fiesta!

I think insurance could be the killer on a 306 and I doubt £800 would buy a decent one.
I sold my 98 R plate 306 for £800 nearly two years ago. Sure it had 117k on the clock but was a great runner and I only sold it because I promised myself a performance car at 25 :p

It always returned high 30's mpg and being the 1.4 was only IG 4.

Whilst I can only speak for mine in the 3 years (and 49k miles) that I owned it it was brilliant reliability wise. I'd highly recommend one as a first car.

I doubt a derv would save a 17 year old money, with the price of diesel being so much more than petrol. Plus isn't a 306 a few groups above a Fiesta or Punto (1.2 Mk2 was group 2 iirc and £600 for a 17 year old fully comp).

Your in dream land mate. At least £1000 fully comp.

£1k fully comp is still dreamland unless you are very, very lucky or have a classic policy.

If your buying one of these it's important to understand that the 1.3 and the 1.25 are different engines. The 1.25 was brand new at the time, the 1.3 was used by Noah.

It might also be worth looking at Nissan Micras, the big problem with these are most of them are only 1 litre. They are however very robust, when I was looking for a car for my G/F I test drove one with almost 160k on the clock. The engine wasn't showing any signs of major wear. Oh and your son will hate it.

It's pretty dam easy to tell the difference.

The 1.3 will be branded Endura-E and the Zetec with be branded Zetec-S. The plastic inlet manifold is the big giveaway for the Zetec.

Fraid not. My last renewal when I was 19 on the Punto was £425. Girlfriend is 19 and just did her Ka and that was just under £400 I think, first one when she was 17 on a 1.2 Clio was £550 odd.

All fully comp.

Who are you insured with!?

The GF is with Tesco, as am I with my Bravo and thats £750 now (£613 before mods). I was with Norwich Union when I was 17, Post Office when I was 18 and Tesco when I was 19 with the Punto.

All quotes got through Confused.com and then went to there website and it came up the same or slightly cheaper.

Yeah, Peerzy, either you're lying or your fronting, or you've found some magical place with a magical insurance company where nobody ever has accidents or claims.

OP, Get some quotes for the usual small cars first - Puntos, Fiesta, Kas, etc and see how they differ to quotes on bigger cars.

I'm with Quinn Direct, they seem to be pretty much the cheapest and take off around £300-400 if you've done Pass Plus like me. I'm 18 in a few days with only a few months named experience, and because my postcode sucks and all young people are naturally boy/girl racers, my quotes on small cars were only a couple hundred less than for bigger, safer, more powerful cars in much higher insurance groups. It seems to be the case that they will charge a fortune if you insure a car, and the choice of car makes little difference.

So I'm now driving a 1.8i Verona Mondeo 1998 that I got for £500 with 78,000 miles on the clock in excellent condition, and paying only £250 more for my insurance than I would be with a Peugeot 106, Saxo, Corsa, Punto etc. I know which I'd rather be driving.

Insurance is tricky, but it depends on too many factors. Yes, generally smaller cars are cheapest to insure for new drivers, but depending on where you live, it may not be much more to insure a much safer, impressive car as in my case.

Not lying, or fronting. I'll see if I can dig out any old insurance certificates, if not I'll ask the Mrs for hers.
