My dad wants a Sony 32" LCD TV (he likes Sony).

There are so many models I have no idea which to suggest - which one is the newest? which one is 'best'?
It'll need freeview etc, 1080p is a preference.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks

I see what you mean - Sony do 18 different models that size!

All the tellies come with freeview (Pointless TV manufacturers not putting one in their tellies these days as the digital switch-over is now happening)

100hz is better (though not by much) for general TV viewing, I pick that over 1080p as you'd be hard pressed to see the difference between that & normal TV viewing at that screen size.

You can compare up to 5 different models on the Sony site, though some differences are simply what colour you want the telly to be of whether it comes with a wall bracket/stand or not.

Not really too sure if this is the case, but I remember the model numbers define the features of the TV.

Most of the newer Sony sets are KDL-XXYZZZZ

With 'XX' being screen size.
'Y' being the Series - The 'higer' the letter the better i.e Z is considered the best
and 'ZZZZ' being the spec I think so again, higher numbers = newer (and I'd hope, better)

As Grimley says, there are quite a few models in the 32" bracket so a brief description of exactly what/how you're planning on using the set would be great.

Other than that, i'd probably put it down to the aesthetics of the outer casing :p

There are usually about 5 or 6 sets in the 32" range.

The reson 17 show on the website is both new models (yet to be released) and older models (usually 2gens old) are kept there so interest can be generated and specs are available for older stock still on the shop floors.

The smaller sony sets are replaced about every 6 months, often slightly faster than this, which generates the extra models you can see on the site.

For 32" and 1080p you looking primarily at the V and W series sets (current models 32V5500 and 32W5500, older gens are the V4000/W4000 series) With the W being slightly better spec than the V, but its marginal.

There is also the E series, lower grade set but with a 'unique picture frame' case so there is a premium on the set and its not great value.

Most of the newer Sony sets are KDL-XXYZZZZ

With 'XX' being screen size.

Close but not quite, the series lettering is not logical, as although in general the later the letter - the better the set, this is not always the case.
U < P < S < D < E < V < W < (E)X < Z
Although not all ranges are available in each screen size, and the specs are shuffled down the lettering at every refresh.

Think thats confusing as a consumer? You should try working for sony, keeping up with constant refreshes and subtle case/spec changes, then conveying that to customers...

32V5500 - was reviewed in this month's 'What HiFi - Sound & Vision' mag - It came out on top...

i have a 32w4000 and its ace, great for pc gaming, HD films and what tv's do.

i got it for £800 price match, you can get them for about £600 now.

Only thing I recommend for you to do is once the screen has had 20 or so hours to burn in, turn off all the advanced image settings and I mean EVERYTHING. Then play about with brightness, contrast until you get an image that is sharp but not fake or over saturated.
