For those considering a 3G connection

My point is that even in a major town, coverage of 3G is still patchy at best. Also the latency is dire, so webpages are taking 5 minutes on average to load.

That's about right for GPRS. Even in areas where you can't get 3G, EDGE should give you a much higher speed than that.

I think my mate said he could get near 2 meg when stationary.

Im the OP pretty sure thats the best GPRS speed you can get. Top tip would be check the EDGE & 3G coverage before opting for a 3G connection.

Just like everything else, including ADSL or cable etc, it is dependant on your location. You should really check that you can get a decent 3G signal in your area before ordering to be honest.

3G is good where I live and although I'd never use it as my main connection I do use it as a backup when my main net goes down or I decide to play with my router etc. It's pretty fast, get a good 500kb/s download from it usually and pings of ~120ms to UK sites.

Speedtest.net can't give me a reliable result on my 3G connection as it doesn't seem to download enough. It reports 0.7mbit which isn't too bad, but in reality when I download a file I am getting over 300KB/sec (2.5mbit) which is pretty good really.

nightmarish for the guy with 0.44
fair way from the server though I guess like all things speed gets siphoned off at various points? or its just plain slow?

Speedtest.net didn't want to work on my N96, but on BBMAX, I got..

Operator: 3
Latency:578ms
Download: 857kbps ~ 104.61 kB/s
Upload: 121kbps ~ 14.77 kB/s

Edit: thank god the home one is a little better

Wow, thats good for a 3G connection

It's not a 3G connection.

Even with a state of the art "3.5G" HSPA+ connection you would be lucky to get 14Mb/s even when right in front of the transmitter. And it's not available in Gibraltar (or the UK for that matter).
