ID card scheme to be launched in Manchester

I spent a long time studying the ID card scheme for a coursework at uni. What was interesting was that biometric passports and biometric ID cards do exactly the same thing, and similar amounts of data. As biometric passports are already being issued (and is the officially recognised document for travelling abroad), and that citizens aren't required to have one (an ID card), what is the point of the card exactly?

The point of the card is to track down legal citizens.

Utterly pointless but i have a worrying feeling that those with a vested interest in making cash out of this will force it in though the back door. If you can get enough big business's and sucklike to demand one for getting a job, as a means to claim its 100% gaurantee against them hiring illegal immigrants or some other rubbish, then before we know it your life starts to get far more hassle if you dont have one than if you do.

Pubs and clubs could start to demand to see one, ferrys and internal flights might do so as well. Dont underestimate just how much potential cash there is for these people to lobby for the uptake of this thing.

Time will tell anyway.

"Pharmacies and post offices could act as enrolment centres for the Government's identity card scheme, Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, has said."

This sound really dodgy to me, at the pharmacies and offices. I don't see the ID scheme going to be make any big impact against illegal immigration or terrorists. Waste of money, the police in essex are too busy with the boy racers.

I loosely quote Frankie Boyle: "Well I am ******* now. If I lose the ID card I will have to get new hands and eyes"

Yeah, apparently an ID card will protect us against illegal immigrants and terrorists... does it have razor sharp edges that we can slice their arteries open with or something? :p

It will be a lot easier for passport control to manage who comes in and out what with fake passports etc. But also banks can require these to be used as well as other public/private sector companies that can otherwise bar illegal imigrants.

I look forward to the idea personally. We need to move forward and saying "its restricting our freedom" is a load of censor.

Surely these will just be faked as well? Great idea but I can't see it working, don't see what I would need one for. Would be better to combine it with a driving licence or something that people actually want to get.

Also forgot the price - £60. Apparently Flight Pilots are having to get them to do their job. Trade unions are gonna be kicking ass soon though.

So the un-fake able passports are now un-fake able again with the new un-fakables features. No the passports are usually faked from 3rd world countries. Also there's no passport control for the people hidden in freight containers.

What like lack on a NI number? Or birth certificate? Don't forget even the Home Office had illegal immigrants working for them.

What case has been given to enforce these cards on the population? Terrorism? um, what terrorism? You do seem awfully naive of just what the Government will do given the chance.

its not naive, just willingness to change. I would rather have 1 id card than have a drivers licence, a passport, a national insurance card and anyother id card for that matter. Not only that but it does what we have today at a better standard. I dont see how you can complain about having an improved version of what we already have in place.

think of it. Night clubs dont have to rely on different types of id cards meaning their bouncers dont need the extra training. Police dont need to mess about with people "leaving their documents" when pulling a vehicle over... you know what Im getting at.

and for people saying "what happens when you lose your card!" well if your dumb enough to do that you do the same as you would with a bank card :p

But if you don't drive you don't need a driving license, if you never leave the country, you don't need a passport. It's being forced for no reason which takes away from a 'free' society.

There's nothing wrong with the current system, all we're doing is handing over more data and more freedoms to a goverment which has shown it can't be trusted with it.

Equipment can do and does the job better then bouncers it will get no better with ID cards over driving licenses.

This country has already had ID cards in the First World War and the Second, the second time aroud they continued till 1952 when they were scrapped after people disliked it as people were hasseled to provide thier ID cards. It made sense in War Time for the threat of the enemy, in peace time there is no threat.

This card will not replace any of those things, you will still need a Passport, Drivers license and national insurance....why the hell would you want one?

just because its not set up now, it doesnt mean the foundations are not there to do so. And I would expect it not be an all in wonder from the get go anyway - people hate change and that would be way out there for the technophobes let alone the masses that hate change.

Its not being forced its clearly being said its voluntary already like the current electronic passport system.

If we lived with these values, we would all be using horse and carts, the world would be flat and the net wouldnt exist. And the government already has your address details with the electoral role, drivers licence and passport control.

Equipment can do and does the job better then bouncers it will get no better with ID cards over driving licenses.

your contradicting yourself by saying your against id cards saying the current system is fine, but saying electronic measures (the id cards) are better than bouncers.

I really dont think 1950's id cards can be compared with digitally linked id cards - I can imagine why it would be such a hassle because it offers no real time information.
