My mums after a new tv. She has it on for approx 8 hours a day. She isn't that bothered about moving to Sky HD yet. She's seen the following two TVs at a highstreet

Panasonic Viera TX-P42X10B 42" Plasma
Samsung LE40B550A5 40" LCD

Now would she be better going for the plasma as these give a better image quality than a LCD?

The thing she's worried about is that Plasma don't last as long as LCDs and she doesn't want to have to buy a new tv in 3-4 years. So she go fo the LCD or the plasma?

Thanks.

Get the Panasonic. Where did she ear that plasmas don't last as long? That's rubbish talk, sounds like it came from a salesman.

The Panasonic is £750 with a free £100 stand and Samsung is £700 without a stand. I told her that the panasonic would probably be better but she's heard that the screens fade on plasmas eventualy and I think that's what put her off.

half life is 100,000 hours mate - 34 years at 8 hours a day before it reaches half brightness. its not an issue lol

One thing I just noticed is that the Panasonic, unlike the samsung, isn't true 1080p and only has a resolution of 1024x768, will this matter?

if you dont know, go and look at some displays and make your decision. it wont make a blind bit of difference if she's watching cable tv 90% of the time. even if she's watching Hd channels only and blurays, id still choose a 720p plasma especially at 40".

Coming from a 40" 1080p Samsung LCD to a 42" 720p Panasonic Plasma, i would never go back to LCD. The picture quality is actually better on my panny due to better blacks, better colour and better motion handling.

Watching Sky is also a ton better with barely any blur that my Samsung LCD suffered badly from. SD channels look brilliant (of course it depends on the channel, but all the major ones look perfect, Sky1, BBC1 etc. ITV is the only bad one, but thats only when football is on). And HD channels look amazing.

I guess really if you were to use it as a TV monitor the LCD may be a better choice, but for anything else the plasma is worth checking out...

I'm interested to see how these new Samsung LCD backlit screens perform...

Oh god, I can live with the orange tint but Auto-dimming that you can't disable has ruined it for me... :(

Maybe if a hacked firmware gets released I may consider one, or maybe the next iteration...

Thanks for the link tho, nice to know I dodged a bullet. ;)

Get the LCD if ya want full 1080p :)

If you're looking at a static image then you will get 1080... when it starts moving thats where LCD falls down. BBC HD and Blu Ray on my M86 blurs and you can see how the motion resolution drops off.

LCD just isnt a technology for moving images IMO, I only need to look at my speedo on a cold morning to confirm that.

I'm inclined to agree with you, that said, a 1080p LCD screen makes a great PC monitor IMO.

LCD's do seem almost there, local LED lighting, 120Hz, etc. but I'm not holding my breath! ;)
