Rumour: 3D Realms Shuts Down

Wait if they've already been let go why is there no confirmation on 3dr site? May5th has last update and that's standard news.

I SMELL A RAT!

Update: 3D Realms webmaster Joe Siegler has commented on the shut down, stating: "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time." Siegler's post also reflects the unexpected nature of the situation, as he was unaware of the impending shut down during an interview conducted yesterday afternoon. Also Duke Nukem Forever publisher Take-Two has confirmed that it was not funding ongoing development of the 3D Realms project.

Biggest mistake they made was not finish the Unreal 1 engined version as it looked good for the time. Eversince then its been a joke and nothing shown since ever looked good. What a waste of time & talent. IMO some people @ 3D Realms made a lot of money on Duke 3D and lost interest in the hard work required to make DNF a decent game.

Yep, I have seen this news from another source - www.wired.com, so I am guessing that DNF has taken too long in development and the companies have had enough. TBH, if it was anywhere close to completion the suits would have rushed it out with bugs, warts and all. We can see this with Sega pushing Empire Total War.
If 3dr have any sense, work as an indy group, do what they want without restrictions and release the game on digital download when they are ready.

We won't ever see the game released now tbh.

Taketwo own the rights so 3DR can't continue developing it as an 'indy' group.

No other developer will touch it, the game has too much of a reputation now and will be judged more harshly than any other game before it.

wow shock horror tbh.

I wonder if they will release what work they have done on the game or not ?

if not

RIP DUKE NUKEM

Maybe they HAVE finished it and the last thing we remember 3dr for is DNF, maybe they will flash release it in the next few days like "HI THERE HERE IS THE GAME, K THX BYE!"

Maybe.

No surprises, but a sad day.

Heh..
If you pre-order "Duke Nukem Forever" before 12pm on 30/12/2009 we will guarantee that you will receive it by the release date of 01/01/2010, if you do not receive it we will compensate you with £3.00 on your shopto account (Terms and Conditions apply).

I can't believe that any true gamer would be happy with this news or think they "deserve" this. Just because a game has been in development for 12 years doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to suck. I can think of many games with a long development process that turned out great.

Gutted :(

serves them rite, 12 years in dev and nothing to show for it. waste of the publishers money and time.

they thought they could make the perfect game but theres no such thing, fools tbh. lesson to other devs.

I guess they really believed in what they were doing and gave it their best shot. It cost the publisher (Take 2 at least) nothing as they weren't funding Duke Nukem Forever's development. I guess 3D Realms just ran out of money and thus ran out of time. I hope, at some point, we at least get to see the various builds produced during the development process. Should be interesting :)
