So my Coolermaster CM690 needs a spruce up. I hate the gun metal grey look of the inside and wanna paint it black...

The obvious choice is Hammerite spray paint but is that too obvious? Am I looking at some specialist paint?

If so what would it be & would I need to coat the paint with anything else once done?

Any help appreciated.

Hammerite is pretty durable and will coat steel fine, don't think it even needs a primer.

The only thing better would be to get it powder coated which would cost more.

I personally drilled out the rivets, took it apart, sanded everything, primed it, gave it a couple of coats with car paint (Halfords), sanding between each one and then gave it a coat of clear lacquer to toughen it.

The got some m3 sized bolts and put it all back together.

Etch primer, give it a sand, another layer of primer then thin layers of your paint of choice, i did mine matt black then a lacquer on top

I was looking at doing this too but wasnt quite sure how. Got a nice Lian Li case but looks awful inside haha.

Good luck with the painting, let us know how it goes

so far i have sparyed 3 cases black gloss in hammerite one old one which went a bit streaky due to build up grease on the out side done which could off been helped just by simply suger soaping the case and leaveing to dry
but the new cases came out like a mirror finish 1st time just hold it a 30cm away and be pataint just work with mavity so say if you wanted to do to back stand it up on it face spray it and leave to dry just repeat on all faces and i will look fantastic and its cheap halfords sell it for 8.89 for a tin and i managed to fully spray every part off my TT kandaulf LCS whic is a super tower so bargin in my eyes and is fast drying if you started in the morning you will have it built and working again by the everning :)

All this without priming first ?
You make it sound so easy - I am thinking of doing my case soon but have been slightly put off by hours of sanding down between coats etc. Sure, a better finish might well be achieved by putting in the hours, but as my case has no window it is more for my pleasure and to increase my sense of achievement with what will be my first ever proper build (not counting my one morning spent trying to hide some cables in an old pc..)

I completely stripped down an original antec 900 and sprayed it - it ended up not working and came off. I then stripped it all down again and took it to the powder coaters, they did a brilliant job the finish is really good.

Did you clean and sand it first? Use primer? Clear lacquer?

The reason it normally comes off is grease or dirt on the surface before painting it.

Well I reckon I'm going to give the Hammerite a stab this weekend.

Ive got a new X48 mobo to put in anyway so it would probably be the perfect time to give it a bash.

I'll upload before and after pics even if it looks like Stevie Wonder did it..!!
If its an epic fail I reckon I'll let the power coaters do a rescue job.

If i was to do this to my aluminum lian li (v2000) wanting achieve a matt black finish

My first step would be

1. clean the insides
2. masking tape up all the bits i don't want painted
3. sand all the metal i want to paint
4. prime
5. sand again
6. prime
7. sand
8. spray paint
9. spray paint
10. spray paint
11. then sand again till smooth finish?

Well, please post pictures showing ALL the stages you go through - I want to do the same and a perfect finish isn't important, but paint falling off is not what I want happen !

OK, but how would you clean it, and why does it need sanding - from what little I know, an etch primer would bond well onto a clean surface, so why sand it down ?
If sprayed slowly and from a decent distance, would it need sanding between coats unless a perfect finish was wanted ?
Not questioning your skills, just wanting to know why...!

Perfection really, your case is what showcases your components, this cant be scrimped on, maybe not the need for the sand of the primer, i just like to know i have a decent coat on, and the final sand may not be needed, depends on how you feel about the final coat

Take it apart first, trust me it's a lot easier, you'll need a 3mm drillbit to do it and some patience putting it back together :)

Also, sand between layers of the proper paint, 1500 grit wet and dry should do (always wet sand).

Fair enough, but what about cleaning - is sugar soap enough ?
My case is a well used and slightly damaged Antec P180, with no window, so this is a fun project for me rather than a showcase (sorry for the pun..)
I'll try to get a decent finish by spraying slowly and evenly, from a distance, then promise to take pictures with my mobile so you can't see the runs....
