Possible duff lan port on Gigabyte EX58-UD3R? Advice needed!

Hi all,

Got a problem with my new Gigabyte EX58-UD3R and wondered if anyone could shed any light on it.

I've recently built a pc with parts from here, and since it was built, I intermittently had the lan connection drop out - usually showing up as problems browsing, or losing connections to game servers.

The connection would usually recover itself after a minute or two. Occasionally, I'd have to reboot my pc. On Friday, after one such reboot, my connection just won't come up at all. Vista sees the lan port as functioning correctly, but I can't even connect to or ping my router.

I've tried other computers on the same cables and lan ports on my router, and they were all ok. I've tried upgrading the drivers in Vista, still same problem. I've reinstalled vista completely, still same problem. To rule out any issues specific to Vista, I've just tried using a Puppy linux live boot disc. Again, it was able to see the lan port fine, and let me configure it, but it would not connect to the router.

All lights on the port look fine. I've tried flashing the bios on the mobo too - this went ok, but again, the lan connection wouldn't connect.

So, I'm fairly certain this is a duff lan port thats just given up the ghost, but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions, or have faced this issue before.

If this does turn out to be a hardware problem, do I need to contact OcUK or Gigabyte? Never had to return anything before

Regards

Are there any lights?
TX lights or anything?
If these are on the that would usually dismiss the problem with the LAN port.

I would still say that the port if ok, and that it could be a problem with the ethernet cable?
Silly question... but are you sure you are configuring it correctly? Perhaps, patch it through directly to another PC?

Boot PC , go into Bios and see if there is a diagnostic function for
the lan port ( checks port and attached cable )

If you want to try to connect directly to another PC you will need a cross over cable.

when connected to the router, does the pc get an ip address starting 192.168? you can check this by going Start > Run > cmd then type ipconfig, your ip address will be the one listed as IPv4 Address

I have a very similar problem from a bundle package from OC. Again the EX58-UD3R and random lan drop, entire network running on gigabit and had a varying connection speed ranging from 10/100/1000 to nothing - currently sitting at 10mb/s!

Anyone any ideas on this and the OP issue?

same problem here
just got the titan goliath system today. installed the beta of win7 first to give it a try and the network worked fine right away. then installed windows xp, and now I cant get my network connected, lights are on, windows says everything is fine, but it keeps telling me the network cable is unplugged...

Have you tried the latest drivers off the realtek website as opposed to the gigabyte? I just got this mobo had a probs at first with the latest driver off the gigabyte website with it just not functioning properly and some continual stuttering playing TF2.

Well just to update you on this - I sent it back to Overclockers a couple of weeks ago and had it returned yesterday saying that the board had no issues at all. :( (Funnily enough the screen prints they supplied only showed LAN at 100mb rather than 1gb but anyway!!)

Will try and rebuild this machine for the third time at the weekend and see what happens!

Jimbu - yes I had used the latest drivers from Realtek - learned a long time ago never to rely on manufacturers updating their software after having Shuttles for years (nforce drivers... rrr)

Blubbber - what spec is your network please?

Why dont you send a web note asking why the prints did not show 1gb
and only 100mb before you put it back together.

Good point, know what the answer will likely be though! Have asked the question as that was what the issue was in the first place (not connecting at full gigabit even though my cr@py old AMD64 is running at gigabit).

This is the 2nd motherboard I've had in the last month that hasn't worked - RMA's them both and can't say I've been hugely impressed with the results!

I had random dropouts with an old board's built in LAN once, I just bought a seperate PCI LAN card for £3 and used that until I eventually replaced the board. Might be worth trying one of those and seeing what happens?

Probably because they weren't using a Gigabyte network router, since its not really that useful anyway. Some routers (old ones) will also only do 10mbs with multiple connections.

Well, fair enough but surely if someone has a reported fault that the board isn't connecting at 1gb then you should have the facilities to test this (a £30 Netgear switch would be enough to test this!)

Well I'm running a Draytek Vigor 2820Vn on the gigabit port to a Netgear GS608 - as I said I'm was running this on an old PC at Gigabit and have hosted LAN games at my house with everyone connecting at a solid 1gb.

this seems to me an known issue with the board, I have the same on eand it keeps telling me that the network cable is unplugged.

Check out newegg reviews on the board and you'll find quite a few people with the same issue.

I'm going to try the realtek drivers, if this does not work I'm RMA'ing as I've reinstalled the OS twice.

Also a separate NIC does not do the job either as it starts to loose connectivity to so looks like a deeper issue on the board.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one but still doesn't change the fact that I was charged best part of £30 (plus £20 recorded delivery) to get the motherboard over only to be told it's fine but not tested properly!

If enough of us moan about the board then you never know!

If they have not got the tools to do the correct testing thats not your problem its thiers
As I say send a web note asking why they did not test it at 1gb
it may have been a mistake and they will replace it.

show them the newegg reviews it's fairly obvious.

relteak drivers did not cure the problem or a bios update :(

I have a UD5 and all was working well until windows7 downloaded an update for realtec and all of a sudden my lan went off so rolled back to old drivers and all came good again.

so try some older drivers

HTH
