Hi guys,

I chanced going through an amber light last week and was unlucky enough to get flashed, must've changed to red as I went through. So that's a nice fine and 3 points for me! I'm pretty gutted, been driving for years and never been in trouble before :(

Anyway, I was wondering if having the points for a camera offence is going to affect my insurance cost at all?

Feel free to share your 'I hate cameras!' stories here :D

Ta!

It will likely have an affect on your insurance, but normally they only care (as in charge more) on renewal, but it'd be a good idea to phone and ask...say something like "I recently got a redlight fine and points, how would this change my insurance?" without giving away your name or policy. :p

I recall that my ex had one on her license and it increased her insurance a bit on renewals, but not too much.

It will probably increase your premium when you renew depending on your age and experience. I'm not sure if you need to tell them before you renew as when you took out your policy you hadn't got the 3 points.

yes. it says so on the policy that any changes have to be declared.

i recently made a claim and hadn't told them about my 3 points for speeding and got a bit of hassle. would have got more hassle had the claim not been for my car being hit whilst parked up.

Thanks guys, I might have worded the OP wrong, I'm already aware that I need to inform my insurer, what I'm asking is am I likely to have to pay much more for my insurance as a result of the points, considering they are only for a minor offence?

As I said, it probably will increase your premium, just ask when you phone up, but it also normally doesn't affect it till you renew/start a new policy. :)

Red light is a TS10. Its actually a pretty bad conviction code in terms of insurance in my experience (i thought i had been done, never heard anything though in the end).

Put my Girlfriends insurance up £50 at renewal. 4 years driving, 1 year ncb.

Quote was only £350 though.

Most insurers want you to inform them as soon as you get done for a driving offense don't they?

Is this correct? Maybe Merlin or someone can clarify this - I was under the impression that you don't need to say anything until renewal time.

TS10 is quite a nasty code for insurance.

I thought there was a few seconds delay on those things, so you wouldnt be flashed at if you went through an orange...

I had a single flash going through an amber light in Croydon once and panicked as I'd cut it a bit fine, never heard anything though. I think unless you were really taking the Michael you'll be fine.

I thought they flashed twice? A few times I've seen people get caught by them and always seen 2 flashes

you can get flashed through going through a amber light? am i missing something here?

you southerner's dont half have it hard down there haha

I suspect the OP is either telling the truth and wont hear anything further or is stretching the truth to avoid a ribbing about running a red light...

Some material facts such as changes in occupation or address are charged for as and when they occur and as such need to be disclosed on the spot.

Accidents on other policies and minor motoring offences are not charged for until next renewal so I don't see why you should disclose til nect renewal.

It's tricky knowing what needs disclosing on the spot and what doesn't. Afaic the only motoring offences that need to be disclosed immediate are ones where a disqualification has occured.

I got flashed once about two years ago going over a green! Well, me and about 6 other cars, cue slamming on brakes and general disarray. Did'nt worry about it apart from the fact an accident almost happened for no good reason. Never heard anything about it obviously and the camera seems to have been repaired since.
