I got a pair of Shure SE210s last week. Unfortunately I rushed it, put them in my ear, they came out with a whole load of earwax on them

Now one of the earphones sounded dimmer than the other, obviously because it was blocked by wax

So I cleaned them with the cleaning tool, and one of the ears sounded fine, but the other continued to be slightly dimmer.

I cleaned my ears out with a bit of water, and thought I had dried them completely, but when I put the earphones in, a bit of water got into the hole :o, and the sound became almost non existent, all this time the sound in the right ear was fine.

I sent them back  and have a new pair sitting in front of me, I don't want to make the same mistake again. What should I do? Thanks!

1) Clean you ears... Cotton buds followed by Audiclean is good. Leave them to dry for a while - then possibly cotton bud them again.

If you don't fancy this - go to the docs and ask for your ears to be syringed. Not overly pleasant, but does a damn good job.

2) Use the black foam tips and don't push them in so far. The tips are meant to only just go inside your ear - not scrape your brain. ;)

I've never had to use the cleaning tool at all - but if you do - avoid touching the metal mesh inside the earpiece.

But then the bass doesn't sound that good if I don't push them in too far and they tend to fall out?

Just noticed I've been sent refurbished rather than new ones :(

I've just used all 3 types of sleeve, my ears are fairly small so I only used that size.

Damn my ears hurt

I'm not particularly good with audio stuff so have no idea about the headphones, but as far as cleaning out your ears go, avoid using cotton wool buds. Get a pipette or anything you can using to carefully drip liquid, and put 2 or 3 drops of olive oil in your ear and lie on your side with that ear up for 4-5minutes. Repeat for the other ear. Do this everyday for a week (I know a pain), but will pretty much completely clean your ear out. Olive oil is actually more effective than eardrops (at least all of the over-the-counter ones in the UK). Other than syringing nothing much will get your ears cleaner than this.

I've had some E2Cs for a few years. I'm on my second set, which Shure replaced after 22 months when they developed a crackle on the leads. (Not bad service!) Mine came with tiny little gauzes which stick over the ends of the tips. With mine, I just replace these every few months - and make sure I clean my ears!

I find the very soft black buds are by far the best. I can't get an airtight seal with either the foam ones or the clear silicone jobs, but I suppose that depends on how capacious your lugs are...
