RS4 Rolling Road Numbers - Another View

It's somewhat strange, the RS4 and RS6 both seem to underperform on the rollers, the S3 generally seems to overperform (results stock around 280-290bhp are seen frequently). Makes you wonder just how they work out the book BHP in the first place...

I suppose it'd need a few owners to dyno their engines to form any kind of proof.....but if it's true then they may have a case.
That said, there are a lot of variables that impact on power output. Perhaps Audi conducted their tests at optimum temp/air density etc, whereas those who drive in the real world can rarely replicate that.

As with any RR its a time and place thing, but when the car is running with other makes of cars on the same day, as mine did (BMW and PORK) and they are there or there abouts, even the 4WD cars it has some foundations I suggest. As I said its not something I get worried about, just find it interesting.

Haldex crap against proper 4WD  :p

I believe Audi's numbers 0-150 are better for the RS6 over the M5 so they feel the weight isnt an issue and from a Rolling start neither should the driver be.

I can't say I've seen the numbers, but the RS is somewhere around 1/3 of a ton heavier than the M5 and again, the transmission losses would be greater due to the extra drivetrain components so I'd expect it to be a lot closer than a 70bhp advantage might suggest.

My car was 15bhp more powerful than the Fiat figure.

I can understand a small difference in claimed and what you get on a RR as it has to work out the flywheel figure from the wheel figure and every car has different transmission loss but for a car thats so expensive to be 100bhp is stunning. I'd be right back to Audi with some proper documented results and ask them sort it out.

One things for sure, if a lawsuit is even remotely possible then the American owners are the most likely to have a punt at one.

I'd imagine the cars that are showing 100 (or more) bhp down on the claimed figure have some technical gremlins of their own. On a low mileage car, that's a lot to lose.

Yeah, still if they are such low mileage and (I assume) new or newish cars they'll still be covered by Audi. There's something seriously wrong with a few of those cars if they are preformaing 25% worse than they should have, if it's the engine or 'technical gremlins' Audi should be sorting it out.

I'd expect that on my £8k Fiat let alone on a £50k+ Audi.

Interesting figures, a work colleague was given a 3L supercharged S4 when his RS4 went in for a service and he was convinced the S4 was quicker despite on paper being almost 100bhp down. Looks like the S4 assuming its up to spec might actually have had more power.

IIRC the supercharged S4 has more torque than the RS4, so this is why it will feel faster.

Agreed that only a dyno run will be of any absolute value.
I dont recall any magazine articles suggesting the RS4/6 cars felt underpowered? And that included group tests, prime example press cars? As Housey said, you can >feel< ~50bhp missing.

Audi Vorsprung durch Technik = Audi Runfree little Ponies

Well, the B6/7 S4 has the same engine as the RS4 - what are the figures like for it?

It must be quite insulting to think you paid all that extra money for an RS4 and it's only pumping out ~ 20bhp more than an S4 (providing the S4 figures are reliable).

Not the new one. The new S4 has a supercharged V6 IIRC.

The RS4 engine has direct port injection, the older V8 from the S4 doesn't, this is poss the biggest difference but there are not that many shared parts.

Housey, is there any evidence that the oil coking issue that's appearing has some connection to the loss of power?
