We're throwing a party soon and thought it would be a great idea if we could get a proper beer keg (and tap obviously) but I'm not sure where to get one from.. Are the obtainable by Joe Public? Doing a quick Google search, I can find a couple places that rent out kegs but they also charge for tap rental, setup and delivery bringing the cost to over £200!

Anyone got hold of a keg in the past for a cheaper price or is that the sort of price I'd be expected to pay?

I expect that will be about the best you can do, as you need the tap and other parts. Why not just get a box/keg with a tap in the barrel then you don't need to mess about.

First result I got was Rent A Keg which seems to be closer to £100 for renting the keg if that is any use. I'd normally suggest picking on a good local brewery if you have one.

//edit, sorry actually read through that site more and it doesn't include tap hire etc.

Last time I was in Makro I noticed a few kegs there, I think they were around 100 pints, might have been 110 or so (it was a few months back now) They were around £100+VAT, but that was without the tap or anything else. Just the keg on it's own.

TBH you might just be best seeing what offers are on in the local supermarkets and picking up a load of crates. And the added bonus that you'll have a variety of drinks, rather than just one kind of beer for everyone :p

If you wan't a "fresh 'live' Real-Ale" experience at your home, at a quality akin to that of properly kept real ale in a Decent Pub, then you could try the Charles wells 'Bombardier' Mini Cask's Which hold about 8 pint's each, I think they do a deal on 3 for about £50 with free delivery if I recall, so roughly £2 a pint and the drink is absolutely superb, and a fantastic 'Real' Ale. Bought quite a few a few years back, Only ever lasted one sitting mind!haha, Tis a great Pint if you like good quality 'real-ale'.

Just walk into the liquor store and say...

"Give me... a keg... of beer." :D

But seriously, my local micro-brewery (Triple fff) sells plastic containers with pretty much however many pints you want in. OK, it's not a proper keg but it does the same job, and will no doubt be cheaper. Might be worth seeing if there's a place local to you that does this.
