Subaru Impreza P1

The best time to buy something is when the majority are looking to sell.
Unfortunatley, when it comes to cars, the perspective buyer tends to have already have a car which he will take a hit on.
Still, mucho bargains to be had.

Agreed. Just like me. I stand to lose about £1500-£2000 on my Type-R, much more Im sure, than what I would have if it wasnt the current climate.

Still, providing your buying another to replace it with, its swings and roundabouts.

Its the people who are selling their powerfull cars for unusually low prices to buy small cheap to run cars for over inflated prices that I feel for...

Actually, no I dont, their just idiots.

And rich to buy one - the going rate is about £25k+ ATM. Mind you, it was £45k+ not that long ago. And as a car it's not that great, it's just the kudos of the rarity.

Down here ive seen them go from 80,000AUD to 120,000AUD.

**** i want one:(

Sorry...

Rebuild the engine with stronger pistons is the usual thing if it already has gone bang. I believe it might be possible to fiddle with the oil supply as well, but that I'm less sure of - I went off classics quite early so never really looked into them. I only know about the chocolate pistons because it's a running joke amongst classic owners.

If you're running extra power, most sensible people fit a knock detector, as det is the enemy here.

M

Always wondered the exact reason why people said they had chocolate pistons!

The reason for the rebuild is IIRC supposably because the P1 is based on the Sti v5 Type R, which is JDM and they weren't remapped well enough for the inferior fuel we have here.

Exactly this. Though lots of them are still running without any issues, usually the ones treated sympathetically, i.e. not thrashed from cold, serviced properly, run on the correct oil (not anything 0w like Mobil1 which is too thin for them), not modded with stupid mods, warmed up/down properly etc.

I owned one, and also a STI5 Type R which it was based on. As a very brief comparison, the P1 was a better day-to-day car for running in the UK, and the Type R was a better 'mad hoon on a sunday or trackday car'. The Type R was a bit noisier/harder on long trips, and tbh the novelty of messing with water spray buttons or DCCD dials on every trip wears off fairly quickly.

By the way, the P1 ECU can be reprogrammed so it's easy to have them properly re-mapped for UK fuel (95-98RON). I had Bob Rawle of BRDevelopments do mine, he's one of the best people in the UK for this. :)

* Though if you ring BRD and speak to Branko, he can be a bit abrupt to the point of being rude sometimes. Don't let this fool you or put you off, him and Bob are one of the best outfits in the business.

All the great mappers can be hard to deal with: Paul Blamire (aka "Pavlo", the man who does my car) hardly speaks, and I believe Pat Herborne does little more than grunt. Can't deny their talent though.

My car dropped two grand in about two months when the crunch hit. I'd now struggle to get £7k for it, and more likely £6-6.5k . Which is why I've decided to keep it.

Although I think the P1 looks fantastic, I can't help but think that if I was to have a 2 door classic, it would have to be an Import STi. However, I do agree as Meridian says, I prefer a newage STi. Leaves space to play without breaking anything, e.g. the gearbox.
And yes the engines basically failed due to the lack of correct mapping on the P1s, but also the piston 3 oil problem, which of course is made worse is the car is detting too!

I preferred Bob Rawle and he is a gent, also Simon (Jolly Green Monster) is a very nice chap and well regarded..

Bob Rawle is generally acknowledged as G*d, at least for classics. I know of Simon, but never met him.

M

The cool thing for me is, Bob Rawle lives just round the corner. :D

He's got some great cars. An old V (I think) reg Impreza that looks totally ordinary on the outside but is running over 500bhp, and a remapped/tuned Porsche GT2. :o

The Impreza is great, if you're in Swindon and see an older gent with grey hair and glasses driving an old silver Impreza - DONT TRY RACING IT! :)
