So this happened last night...

indeed

your just petrified of violence, can picture you running away when you see an arab on the bus for fear of being blown to pieces

I do not like violence at all no, and so far in my life I have never been involved in any but have witnessed my fair share.
If you mind your own business you are extremely unlikely to ever be attacked, if you provoke it then don't cry when you get hurt.

Easy to make all these macho comments about retaliation and standing up for yourselves when sitting in front of your computer but it's a different matter when faced with someone who maybe coming down off a 3 day phet/coke binge, i certainly wouldn't want to provoke them or stand up to them, just leave it be and walk away.

Keeping to your self and provoking have no differences, apart from one being your fault and the other not.

Any given day you could be a subject of violence for no apparent reason. Be it you witnessed something, or just ignored someone which provoked a reaction.

But then again, maybe your one of these types who always kept indoors at school or wasn't a threat to anyone, not even a cat?

it is also easy to stand up for yourself, unless your absolutely petrified

i hope that no1 ever backs down from everything, '

And what's wrong with backing down from confrontation?
I'm 51 years of age and I've been going into some of the roughest pubs in the Potteries since I was 17 and I've never been hit.

Correct

Correct

because backing down = letting them get away with it, that is unacceptable!!!!!

and its not correct, some people are going to hit you regardless of what you do, so you must be in proper stance not turning your back to them or "ignoring" them

This is for the Stokies on here but some of the pubs I used to go to were/are the Kings Arms Meir, Tiger Moth Meir, Station Meir, Waggon & Horses Meir, Winchester Bentilee, Hollybush Bentilee, Hillberry Bentilee, Burton stores Hanley and so on.
These are some of the worst pubs you will ever go into but I never had a sniff of trouble and the reason being is that I know how to act in these places.
If you know how to act, know when to say something and mind your own business trouble WILL NOT come your way.

You forgot the Black Horse in Hanley. :)

That is an excellent question an IMHO it is the best thing to do in this day and age.

I say that because theres a very good chance the bad guy is carrying. Life unfortunately is not like those old books where two blokes went at it 1 vs.1 with "honor" using just fists.

Granted what happened to the OP and myself sucked but at least we got punched and they didnt pull a blade out. We were very lucky.

*That* should be your FIRST thought in an encounter like this. Metal + flesh = you lose.

Someone says something you take deep breaths and walk away. It aint worth it guys it aint worth it.

some people are going to hit you regardless of what you do

Agreed - if there is absolutely no escape then of course you will have to physically defend yourself.

because backing down = letting them get away with it, that is unacceptable!!!!!

I also agree - it is unacceptable. But the danger of a weapon is too great. Also thats yet another "gotcha" in the UK! You bash them up TOO hard and YOU get done for it! I tell you the laws are just strange! Its like the burglary one where you gotta think "Right....... use resonable force!" Mr. Burglar please put down my plasma TV or I shall throw my pillow at you.

Be safe out there.

Every town/city has their bad areas, being a Stokie is nothing special...

Also, if you can go to a pub without trouble coming to you, then I'm sorry but those pubs are not the "worst" pubs...

I don't get why people are saying walking away will "save" your life if the person is carrying or not...

Fair enough, if you've walked away and nothing happened, then you're very lucky indeed. But what's to say as soon as you've turned your back, you wont feel a 6" blade rammed in your kidney or spine or the attacker gets your from behind?

I agree that a lot of the time you can scan for trouble before it hits you, act a certain way, mind your own business and trouble will not come your way. There is, however, exceptions to this and I've experienced it. I remember one time, I told a guy who wanted a fight for no apparent reason that I had aids, and that he might catch it if we got into a fight. it actually worked. :)

Valid point - and you are correct that has caught some unfortuante people out. I would think that in that situation one would keep a heads up on whats goin on and make like you are gonna cross the road etc. You look left and right for traffic but really you are keeping an eye on them etc.

And of course dont be afraid to run - if you are a very fast runner it can save your life. Im lucky cuz I can sprint like a bat outta hell!

But the key here is risk management. We cannot eliminate risk, we never can. But we can manage it.

So if you find yourself in a new city in a dark alley at 0200hrs you've not managed risk well cuz if you had you would not be in that situation in the first place. Maybe you should have taken a cab home from that nightclub you just left to get to your mates house instead of walking.

Someone speaking here who knows exactly what the score is!

So many of you seem oblivious to what life is really like in some of the 'Working-class' (Use that term loosely)areas/pubs and are so naive in comments you make.

I've been going into what would be termed 'rough pubs' since the age of 14 and played my first Gig in a pub when I was twelve.

I have been absolutely wasted in many pubs since the age of 16 and have seen many people get involved in fights because of the way they carried themselves. I have never been involved in any trouble whatsoever. You just mind your own business and show people respect and 99% of the time they will do the same to you whether they be "Chav" "Emo" "Gough" "Metaller" or any other of these ridiculous Steretypes the media choose to give people in the UK.

How old are you?

I've also been drinking in pubs since I was 14... Heck I was on the streets drinking from 8. Nothing special...

Today is the present, not the past. This day and age, everything has changed from the times where men used to be men and sorted out their problems fairly...
