Windows 7 hits RC stage Build 7100

Is anyone running Messenger seeing that the icon is sitting in the main portion of the task bar and not the notification area? I've seen a couple of articles (e.g. this one: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/...o-notification-area-system-tray-in-windows-7/) that suggest that you can force messenger to start in Vista mode to get it to behave, but I would have thought MS would have something like Messenger working without hacks.

Or is it just me?

Just format that partition and do a clean install.

As I mentioned on the previous page, I tried but it says it can't do it because the partition is in use.. not sure why I get that message but it wont let me format it.. I am probably doing something wrong, but tried it both through My Computer and the Computer Management windows and neither worked.. :(

It won't let you format the partition because you are within Windows. Boot from the CD and when it asks you where to install Windows 7, click on advanced options and format the partition.

Re the problem I had with my PC not staying asleep after either pressing the sleep button on the keyboard or Sleep in the Start/Shut down menu.

This is how I cured it :- Control Panel>Device Manager>Right Click Network Adhaptor>Left Click Properties>Left Click Power Management>uncheck "allow this device to wake up computer".

May not cure yours, but it has mine.

Usual disclaimers.

That's what I did earlier, clicked advance option, got all my drives, picked the right one but never got the option to format it, instead it just said the partition contained window drives and would create a folder called windows.old.. shall try again though and see if I missed something..

Edited to add that I am trying to format the partition where I have Windows 7 BETA when I am logged into my XP, so on different drives.. but maybe that wont matter..

Install like that and then go pull the files you need out of the windows.old folder before deleting it.

If you're not scared of the command line, DVD ---> Language settings screen ---> Repair ---> Command line

( The first command switches to drive C: , second command lists the contents. Just to make sure that you're formatting the right drive. )

Code:
c:
dir/w

then

( /q = quick format ; fs= filesystem )

Code:
format c: /q /fs:NTFS

DISCLAIMER : At your own risk, of course.

okis, will do that! Can I just confirm though, that if I do that it wont create another partition or such and when the windows.old been deleted I will get the 24GB or so that its taking now all back?

Edit: eXor, I think I just do as Darkman suggested.. not to comfortable with command lines.. knowing me I would probably do something worng and then have to install my XP also!

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I just installed Windows 7, installed all the drivers (I think they installed, lol) and I'm not quite sure the Experience Index thingy is quite right:

Does that seem reasonable for the following spec:

Q9550 @ 3.4
P5Q Pro
HD4890
4GB DDR-800
X-Fi Xtreme Music

I'm thinking the 6.9 score for the graphics is a bit low, considering people with slower cards are getting well over 7.

I first installed the 9.4 drivers and then the newer Win 7 drivers (those WHQL ones), but still get same score.

Is this normal?

Currently dual booting vista and 7 want to delete beta 7 and then overwrite vista with the RC and use this as my main OS. Can anyone see a problem in doing so?

Not apart from the obvious - that you'll be trusting everything to an unfinished and potentially unstable OS. Make sure you redouble your back up strategy and you might be ok.

Personally I've left my old XP install untouched as a back up, and have used nothing but Windows 7 since build 7057.

thats what i've done, 7 is now my main os.
all user data and programs will be placed in windows.old when you install win7.

What is windows.old? With that be on the same partition that I install win7 on?

Well yeah, been running 7000 since it came out with no problems, so hopefully I will be ok

Yep, it's a folder that'll be created right next to your Windows folder if you do an upgrade. Not sure if it appears when doing a fresh install though.

Good good. I've had no issues at all either, which I'm pretty chuffed about. Still being extra cautious with any important stuff though, as you never know :)

It was stuttering. When loading up a game it would start off fine but after about 20 seconds of moving around it would become quite stuttery and the camera movement felt like you were underwater, as though there was some resistance there.

Thanks for the advice but it doesn't matter now because I am back to using trusty XP. I will give Windows 7 another go if I upgrade in the future.
Just buy an extra 2GB of RAM. It'll be dirt cheap. 7 is a vast improvement over XP and well worth using now.
