Thanks I do like the look of that ATi and it has far supperia clock speeds. Is there anything else people?

4870, i say. with your MB it give you the option of crossfiring and you will be more used to ATi software im guesssing

Ignore the overclocking, it's a moot point.

The 4870 1GB and GTX260-216 are the same speed. Simply take the one that's cheaper - in this case the nVidia offering at £139.

From the benchamrks ive seen the 4870 is equal to or faster then the 192sp 260GTX but the 216sp 20GTX is a fair bit quicker :)

Basically that although it must be ATi unless Nvidia have big pros. I want the best that money will buy.

As Nvidia don't have any major pros over the 4870 in that price range - your preference towards ATi would mean it's the 4870 1gig.

TBH, ATi or Nvidia you're still going to end up with a great card.

If its anything like the OCuk 260GTX 55nm I got then they are nice cards - far better than the much more expensive BFG overclocked version I got for my first 260 :( running slightly cooler and the core overclocks a lot better (760v729) tho the VRAM only hits ~1100 compared to 1300ish on the BFG.

The reason I would go with the 260 personally are:

nVidia always seem to have a stable driver out on or before the release day of any new game if the current WHQL drivers doesn't already support the game optimally... even if its a beta they are usually stable. With ATI its not unusual to have to wait a month sometimes for proper driver support with a new release game.

260 Idle mode uses less power than the 4870.

260 Generally runs quieter (tho this depends on the coolers on the cards)

While performance wise they generally run pretty close (those benchmarks above the 4870 scores seem a bit on the low side) the 260 has always felt more stable to me with less slowndowns ingame.

260 Usually has great overclocking scope - many of them will do +25% overclocks out the box no hassle. From my limited experience a lot of 4870 cards struggle to hit much more than +10% out the box without having to modify voltages and/or cooling.

2 random articles, both the same conclusion. 260GTX c216 is quicker then a 1Gb 4870

OP, get the OCUK Value 260GTX, its cheaper and faster :)

But the XFX 4870 originally linked above is overclocked over standard and is roughly 10% quicker (its practically 4890 performance). It can also clock even further than this: http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=714&pageid=11

The 260GTX will still use less power and is still cheaper. Radeons used to have the upper hand in picture quality, not sure if thats still the case.

Whichever card the OP goes for, he wont be disappointed.

Those reviews are to old as they are november 2008 the 3 reviews i have below are from april this year. They are 4890 reviews but both the gtx260 and 4870 1gb are in there. From these reviews at stock it looks like the 4870 has the advantage but if you like to overclock the gtx260 overclocks much better.
