Trying to help someone go VPN

few questions as i'm new to vpn though and never dabbled

1) do you need to have a fixed I.P. for VPN to work ?

2) is it a log on screen and then all your internet access is routed through
their tunnel ?

3) will something like kaspersky IS still work ok - wont get confused ?

there wil be little downloading on in it - just email and web

and sites or recommendations of vpn providers welcome

thanks

1) do you need to have a fixed I.P. for VPN to work ? No although it can make things easier. Even if one end has a fixed and the other dynamic, this is still better than 2 dynamic IPs. With Dynamic IPs youll probably need to make use of a Dynamic DNS account.

2) is it a log on screen and then all your internet access is routed through
their tunnel ? How you connect depends on the method used. All methods require some kind of server or router which has VPN configured on it. The simplest method I can think of is to use a router like a Draytek 2800/2820 which has the ability to receive VPN connections and where you can create user accounts. There may be simpler methods but thats the easiest I can think of :)

3) will something like kaspersky IS still work ok - wont get confused ? The Internet Security is probably just a firewall and it might detect phishing websites etc but it should still work fine as long as the relevant ports arent blocked. If you have trouble getting a VPN to work with it installed, try disabling it to see if that resolves the problem.

there wil be little downloading on in it - just email and web - thats good because unless you VPN to something with a very good connection, the speed throughput is normally pretty slow :P

dont need fixed ip - just wondering if it helps vpn

this is not a case of connecting to the office - my idea (and it may be wrong)
is to vpn to the vpn provider and then out to the internet , so in a way adding a layer of security

i'm not big on this so any pointers or websites appreciated

be good to run a trial of one i guess to get the hang of it

kas is - is kaspersky internet security - its their great antivirus + their own firewall

Vpn to proxy is quite common for anyone who uses public wifi spots, it's the how that varies. Hardware (securest) or software (easiest).

If it's from laptop/pc to pc then Hamachi is the quickest, easiest way; comodo easyVPN another. If you want hardware based the simplest way is routers with vpn, draytek is one, sky dg384gt off ebay flashed with official firmware* for less than £15 is another. More expensive are dedicated vpn firewalls, more secure than routers but you pay for it.

Then there's always the option of using a pay for secure proxy which plenty companies offer which unlike something you run fro office to home, wont be limited by your upload speed.

For ip, well that's up to you. If you use a paid proxy it doesn't matter, you simply log in. If is software how you set up decides, could be simply type in network name then log in, or actually needing the remote gateways ip. If it's hardware then fixed ip is best, if not there's plenty free dynamic dns services, most routers use dyndns, but if you can have software on the client pcs then dns-o-matic will propagate faster. All that really matters in then end is one pc being able to find the other.

* the newest V1.02.19 firmware added the advanced vpn tab

sounds a bit complicated from my amateur vpn background

this might help describe my situation better

home pc - conected to router then to isp = all cables

can i use a vpn to secure the data down the line ?

so dont i need a vpn provider to connect to ?

thanks

looks like i'm asking for the wrong thing then - maybe

i get the idea of using a vpn to connect to work network but is there nothing similar
for normal web access ?

sure i've heard of downloading types mentioning vpn type tunnels for their downloads ?

my example isnt into that but its just to show

You probably have, like i said it's common for lappys using public wifi, after all if you don't encrypt it anyone can read it. Usually it's software like hamachi to a pc at home, which is acting as the proxy, stopping anyone reading your laptops email/passwords, but the speed is limited to the upload speed of the line.

If what you're saying you want is an encrypted connection to a proxy for the purpose of keeping yourself hidden on the internet then you will almost certainly have to pay for it. If only because the free one's arn't secure in the slightest. Downloading types typically use then to stop anyone knowing it was then downloading that movie they shouldn't have ;), but a lot simply don't like to hand out more data than they need to.

Proxys arn't really my forté, but know that a lot of websites and some services won't work if they detect that you're running a proxy meaning you have to use a properly configured one, finding that is the problem. Ironkey have some of the best proxys i know of, particularly from a simple plug in and use perspective, but you certainly pay for it. You could do a similar job for less i'm sure, but you' need to ask someone else.
