Wondering if someone could explain Protein drinks for me.

Recently I've been going to the gym about 4 to 5 days a week after work and my monthly progress training guy is going to put me on a more intensive work out as I am putting in a lot of time on a basic strength regime. I asked him if there was a way to stop my muscles aching so much and he recommended a slight change in my diet and these protein shakes I see a few people doing.

I'm not too sure on the whole idea of them. I get the theory that the extra protein helps your muscles rebuild quicker but are there different sorts of protein drinks? I'm going purely for strength rather than better looking muscle so does this alter the type I should use? And (at the risk of sounding stupid) do some contain steroids. I've heard that some are for body building and contain steroids to help muscle growth but I don't think this is true.

If anyone has any advice it I think you in advance and if anybody here uses any would you recommend a certain brand or type?

Get some plain whey from Myprotien, I cant remember my discount code but in sure one of the regulars will know theirs off by heart! :D

Some have extra things like creatine and stuff in them, but its a lot (and I mean a lot) cheaper to buy seperate

As above, get some unflavoured stuff from myprotein.co.uk and then flavour it as you wish. Just remember that you still need to watch your diet; don't rely on them...and no, they don't contain steroids:p

Thanks for the links and advice, I have it bookmarked. How long would you say 5kg would last when I'll be having one 4-5 days a week after a work out? I'll be bulk buying from the site but I was just wondering out of curiosity.

How do you flavour it yourself? Just with standard food flavourings?

You will only be taking 1-2 scoops each time which is 30-60g so 5kg should last you a while, most people use milk shake powder like nesquick to flavour unflavoured stuff I prefer to just drink it as is.
Use MP32093 for 5% off.
Also whats the rest of your diet like?

You don't need any protein shakes really at all. First work out what your diet is like and see how much protein you're taking in naturally and see if you can rebalance the protein intake from that point of view. I take in around 200g a day and that's 90% of the time from my diet rather than shakes. On days where I work out harder I eat more for a few days. Don't get me wrong I do take extra shakes when I'm being lazy or haven't got the opportunity for decent protein intake, but it shouldn't be relied on.

They contain no steroids, it is purely protein that comes from producing cheese - pure simple protein. If you don't train hard and your body has no use for it you'll just pee it away anyway, but you'll be putting your kidneys under extra stress if you go mad.

Food isn't cheap, but you should try and get the best food you can down you, if you struggle then whey protein is a good way of getting extra protein down - but please please please don't think of it as a magic potion or something that will make you grow muscles as it WON'T! The only thing that makes muscles grow is hard training, a good diet a lots of sleep. Protein power even with this will do sod all. Protein powder is a SUPPLEMENT not a requisite for hard work or a replacement for food please remember that.

Thanks for the code, it's very much appreciated. My diet isn't bad at the moment though it does lack structure. I make dinner and lunch myself (lasagne, beef stew and dumplings, home made burgers and pizzas occasionally) and don't really eat take away food or ready made meals. I need to look at what's in the food more and focus more on protein. Chicken and fish if my lack of knowlegde serves me correctly?

I'm going to look into my diet and structuring it properly. I don't eat any junk food (mostly tastes horrible to me) but I need to eat more protein filled things. I don't aim on relying on the protein shakes, it's just that with working so much time is a bit tight sometimes for preparing a proper meal.

And I'm under no illusion of the protein shakes providing some magic accelerated process of looking big, I just want to make sure I don't damage my muscles by over working them. I'm not really bothered about getting big muscles and a six pack at all, I just want to get strong and fit. Thanks for the advice, I always appreciate when people take time to give me a bit of help.
