Hi all,

Looks like my question belongs here, maybe networks/internet - admins please move if in the wrong place.

I have Nildram dsl - not for much longer given the talktalk takeover today.

I'm now looking at alternatives, we have Virgin cables in the street so I'm looking at broadband + TV.

My question - The hd in V+ hd box is a ridiculous 80gb - they own the box and it never goes out of warranty - nice in one way - but does mean that I can't swap the hd for something a little bigger.

Who has one of these? Have you just swapped the hd for soemthing better?

How many hours sd and hd can you get on one of these?

Thanks in advance.
V

Ive watched the single hd channel for about 2 hours out of the 2 years Ive had the box... I cant beleive virgin even use the hd capability as any form of benefit, with only 1 channel...

Other than that, I much prefer the V+ over sky+, especially with the on demand services offered by virgin...

I'm on sky hd now & the choice of channels is better, the other half really misses the V+ box though, the catch up telly etc on virgin is 100x better than I have now :(

The token hd channel is letting them down a bit, I had expected more but then at least it's less worrying about the tiny hd size.

And I'll need a new n+ router as the adsl one won't be any use I suspect.

ive just switched from virgin to sky hd and i must say is 100 times better. yes im sacrifsing my 50meg internet for 16meg but hey the wife and kids come first :D

Do you know how to use a screwdriver and common sense? If yes, then V+ box can me "upgraded" to a bigger HDD yes. Officially you are not supposed to as they own it but....yeah.

all you miss out on with Virgin is the HD channels for sport and Sky HD, to counter that you have a massive back catalogue to watch and a superior replay function.

sky might have more channels but they're all junk so i don't consider that an actual benefit.

I wouldn't say the HD channels are junk though. Discovery, Nat Geo, Geo Wild, Sky1HD are excellent to name a few. Movies in HD are awesome as well.

A lot of the stuff I watch is starting to come on HD channels now, so I watch Sky Sports HD, Sky 1 HD, Channel 4 HD, Discovery HD, the movie channels in HD, the big let down here is BBC HD.......dude! I would have though all shows filming nowadays would be in HD! (i.e. Apprentice etc)

i was referring to the extra channels which aren't on V+, you get all the discovery/nat geo etc on virgin albeit in upscaled SD which doesn't look too shabby.

virgin dropped the ball big time with their HD service though, total joke but the box does upscale very well so it's worth having just for that.

Virgin has loads of HD stuff on demand - Movies, BBC iPlayer, HD on demand channel.
More HD stuff coming later this year as well.

i wouldn't say it has loads, i just got the V+ box and am quote dissapointed with the content tbh.

i looked at all the music videos on demand and i could have sworn there was loads of music vids in HD but it seems there isn't now, atm there are 5 live sessions in HD. the hd series that they have available aren't anything i really watch except blue planet but i saw that ages ago. the HD movies at £5 a pop aint really worth it as i may aswell rent a blueray and have 1080p and HD audio. when i had the box installed the guy did say that more channels are coming this year but i'm pretty sure that virgin said they were getting 4 more channels at the start of last year and again before xmas and there is still only 1 channel.

on the plus side the the wife is happy with being able to pause/rewind and the upscaling is pretty darn good.

We've been on Virgin for about 3 years now because we cant get Sky due to having a massive great tree blocking the satellite signal.

We got an HD TV the other week and so upgraded to Virgin HD. And i must say im massively disapointed. One HD channel is appalling. Whether this makes me stupid or not I had no idea that we wouldn't get Sky Sports HD and the Movie channels in HD.

It aint right.

the HD offering is a bit weak, but tbh i'd trade it for all of the 4OD, iplayer, ITV Catchup and back catologue of things to watch (like band of brothers, terminator: Sarah connor, music vids etc).

And tbh the upscaling is good enough to not worry too much for day to day tat like 'Stenders.

For me the on-demand portion of V+, and its upscaling (and the fact i get betterbroadband service) for me outweigh the increased cost of SkyHD (i wouldnt subscribe to movies & sport). BUT the number/quality of live HD offerings on Sky is now pretty decent (iof you have the full package).
