So, I've turned to the dark side and have a MacBook Pro, however, I am getting slow WIFI speeds at home (I'm not sure about other networks, haven't taken it anywhere else yet). The speeds I'm getting are about 700kbps on a network that has 62% signal and 8% noise according to iStumbler. All my Windows based devices get much faster connections.

Any ideas?

Have you got Windows installed (via Boot Camp) on your MacBook Pro?

If you do, you could try testing your Wi-Fi speeds in Windows to see whether it's a Mac OS X problem or a hardware problem.

Nope, although I do have VMWare fusion installed, but no doubt that will still use OSX drivers etc.

I'm pretty certain you can either use the network in VMWare Fusion as passive (through OS X) or direct (actually straight to the device). It's in the preferences somewhere :)

What version of OS X do new Macs come with? If it was less than 10.5.6 and even if you have updated (through Software Update) then try the combo update. Getting the latest update via the full big combo one seems to fix almost any problem with the OS.

You can indeed, it's under your Windows virtual machine network preferences which is the "Connect directly to the physical network (Bridged)" preference :)

Oh, another point I should have made at the start. It seems to be particularly prevalent when accessing Windows shares via Samba. I'll test fusion with a bridged connection when I get home :)

Vista perchance?*

*That's not a general knock at Vista, just that in my experience (i've used my Mac with shares from Ubuntu, XP & Vista) Vista for whatever reason was always noticeably slower. In both connecting and transfer speed.

No, Server 2008.

Turn off all wireless security, see if that makes any difference. I'm not suggesting leaving it like that, it's just for a trial.
