ive noticed on many threads on this forum that every time the golf mk3 vr6 is mentioned people rate them as being crap and that they dont handle.

Now im not an SME but every single mk3 ive owned and driven (so around 20) has handled perfectly well. Granted you cant throw it into a corner and power round it like you can in a 200sx, nor can you expect it to corner like a 600kg 205 gti, however for perfectly sensible spirited driving I have never noticed any issues ?

Could it be people using cheap coilovers ruins the handling of these cars and thus, the reputation!?

Think it has something to do with the majority of Golfs having poor/dull handling to begin with, and then a larger and heavier engine gets plumbed in.

And if you have owned/driven 20 of them, this suggests that you are rather biased.

Owned 3 and driven around 15-17 over 5 years. Im not biased ive owned more peugeots than vw's!

I just dont get why everyone who doesnt have one says they are crap when personal experiences + that of actual owners say different ?

This isn't necessarily the case here - but normally it's because someone says something, then everybody else takes it as gospel, without even thinking about it or checking it out.

Then they proceed to repeat it at every given opportunity, mostly for the less-well educated just to assume it's right and nod and concur with them :D

I drove a MK3 the other week. It was utterly dire compared to my MK2. It felt lardy, soggy, and disconnected.

I've got a MK3 golf and tbh I think the handling is terrible :(

I span it a couple of weeks ago going round a roundabout in light rain. Before anyone says, I wasn't going fast, was doing 20mph. General use of the car doesn't feel great either and I always worry when cornering on B roads.

mix of poor driving and pants tyres??? they are built to understeer like a boat!

In any case, they handle ok, but nothing more, they are not horrific, nice stiff roll bar and decent shocks and it will handle well, still wont make it any lighter though!

Why start a thread about a car that hasn't been talked about in a long long while. It's widely acknowledged that the MK3 was a bit fat for it's own good.

My driving isn't that bad lol :p

Maybe tyres but the car is standard apart from being lowered and im not planning on spending money on it, so a roll bar and shocks aren't something I would be adding to it. Saying that though, if it makes a descent improvement, I might do :D

How much would it be?

Thats the question, what else have you driven?

A VW is going to feel good compared to an average Pug, that said, a VW is not, imo, a BMW or Merc et al.

I used to own a long line of Fords and loved them, then I tried the competition! :o

I work with a chap with a VR6 Golf, he describes it as "a gem of an engine, sitting in a turd". :D

I drive a VR6, I'm not sure if is still on standard suspension as I've never driven any other VR6's to compare against.
It's certainly not boat like, infact I'd describe it as reasonably firm however you are aware of the weight up front.
If I was to use it on a track then the suspension would start to become more of an issue with understeer and wallowing. I believe the VR6 was designed to be more of a Grand Tourer than a nippy A-B blaster and was setup to reflect this.

Indeed - people think "V6 in small car = M3 beater", which it isn't and was never ment to be.

I've driven a few & liked them tbh.

I just prefer BMW to VW.

Depends which BMW/Merc you are comparing it to. Sure it won't sit very well against an M3 but it will cain several of the BMW/Merc pieces of turd too.

So your just as biased as the OP.

This thread is a waste of time completely. Just because X or Y (who are probably BMW fanboys) think the MK3/4/5 GTi are pieces of turd doesn't make it so, equally someone else saying that they are great doesnt either. For the record I think a 530i is a piece of turd when compared to a MK5 GTi (and yes I have driven both), but I also think a 335d or M3 are awesome.
