My new video card sounds like an Amstrad CPC 464?

Hiyas, I just picked up:

Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 "Rampage GLH" 2048MB

Installed it which went well and its working too. Now, I know
this card is meant to be loud, but I thought it was fan noise
the people were talking about, my card is making a secondary
noise, but only when its under load. Sounds like an Amstrad
loading a game up, now for those who are too young to
know that sound, imagine a cassette being rewinded in
slow-mo

Is this normal? If so, fair nuff.

I just dont want it to blow thats all lol

LOAD "Crysis"

:D

Sounds a bit strange too me, have you tried just stopping the fan for a second with your finger just to make sure its not the fan?

Yes m8. Ive stopped both the fans at the same time while loading crysis and you can still hear it. it sounds like feedback or something.... but, its not comming through my speakers and im unaware of any onboard speaker on my mobo. If I put my ear up to it, it sounds like its coming directly from the vid card itself.

Do these video cards have an onboard speaker? or moving parts apart from the fan?

This is so weird

Actually... my mobo does have an onboard speaker, it beeped at me once for forgetting to plug the power for the cpu. Could it be possible that this video card is sending feedback to the onboard speaker? I wish I could try the card in a different PCI Express slot, but I cant, the dam thing is that big, it wont go anywhere else

sounds like noisy coils they whistle quite high pitched under load? If so you should probably RMA it. Make sure the noise is coming from the graphics card though. It could be coming from the motherboard or PSU.

Hiya chaps

I got the reply from Aurhinius and decided to swap out the
rampage for my old 8800 GT OC, lost my Raid after removing
the ATI drivers and had to format OS lol great luck today!!!!

I never noticed any of these whistling noises with my old card..
but then... my old card doesnt require half as much juice I suspect.

I ran 3D Mark and held my ear up against my OCZ 750w PSU
and funnily enough, yes, im hearing different tones, nowhere
near to the same extent in terms of volumn as compared to
the rampage, buts its diffinatly there.

Tough call, card or PSU. I dont have a spare PSU to test and
because my current PSU is perhaps 2 years old, im gonna point
the finger at it. Im in no position to do anything else I suppose

Wasnt expecting this tbh, dont entirely have the funds
right now

Sad but such is life :D

Sounds like exactly the same problem I had with an OCZ PSU. I had the 780 watt ModXstream, which made high pitched whining noises when the video card (an 8800 Ultra at the time) was under load.

Solution, buy a decent PSU, OCZ are by no means the worst power supply manafacturer in the world, but they are certainly not the best.

I purchased a Seasonic M12 700 watt and my whining problem instantly disappeared.

If it's a whistling noise coming from the GPU it's fine, nearly all my GPU's recently have done it, 2900XT, both 8800GTS's, my 4870, nothing to worry about.
