Hi guys,

Anyone used the company 'Explorers' to dive the Red Sea from Sharm al Sheikh in Egypt? Just asking because a friend and I want to go over there and do some diving and are not sure whether to pre-book a package or just do things separately. I am PADI qualified already and he is looking to take the PADI while out there. If anyone has any experience of Explorers or similar please let me know. Cheers.

Booked via them last year for accomodation but have been using Emperor as my dive centre for the last four years.

Off to Marsa Alam this year having done Taba, Nuweiba, Dahab and Sharm.

I wont be in any great rush to go back to Sharm. Place itself was a dump and diving not that great- very very crowded.

I can heartily recommend the Emperor divers centre at the Hilton in Nuweiba, great staff and lovely quiet (read NOTHING to do other than dive and drink after diving) resort.

I don't have PADI actually I have SSI, but from what I understand they are pretty much interchangeable?

Thanks for the suggestions, we are on a bit of a budget, hence the appeal of the explorers packages with flights and accomodation and half price dive packages. Will check out emperors site too.

Ah, If you are on a budget I recommend Red Sea Relax. Free accommodation if you dive with them, so its only flight and money for food/spends.

In fact I recommend them even if you aren't on a budget.

I did my first "introductory" dive with PADI in Cairns and got a 2 week ear infection. Me thinks they are a money making racket much like corgi hehe

I spent one night in Sharm before escaping to Dahab. Although i didn't stay in their accommodation, i dived with them for 2 weeks. Very friendly atmosphere, professional staff and also Dahab is a great place to chill out. Spent a few evenings smoking hukkas and playing chess with the locals.

Dahab has been my fave dive site. Not really for the wildlife but for the Canyon and Blue Hole dives.

Blue Hole is great. The instructor i had for deep diving regularly went down to the bottom (112m) on that crazy trimix stuff and probably saved my life when i got narced at 45m.

Yup, booked my first diving holiday with them. They used to use a company called Ocean College for the actual diving http://www.ocean-college.com/ - They were/are top class, one of the better companies in the area. I'd check to see if that's who they still use, also which hotel are you thinking of staying at?

Explorers Ocean Club/college is a good venue. Its quite a way from things (like the sea) but is pure divers :).

At the end of the day your up at 7 for the boat and back at 7 for dinner. A few drinks on the roof bar and sharing stories of the days fun and start again tomorrow.

If your diving right you don't have time for much else!

Did marsa alam this feb just gone and it was good and quite close to all sites including the dugongs! (search for my post;))

Sharm is a hole :/ And, if you go during a busy period, i've seen queues in teh water to get down to dive sites.

My advice would be to try another area of the red sea. Unrivalled diving for cheap, close to home experiences, and the Red Sea is a treasure tove of diving... but personally i wouldnt pay for Sharm.

It's good to see so many divers on OCUK! Sharm is what it is "tacky but cheap", having said that it's close to some great dive sites such as Tiran & Ras Mohamed. If you just wanted a purely diving holiday you wouldn't even see land you'd get on a liveaboard do 4 dives a day and end up with an ear infection by the end! ;-)

If you want some sun, fun, beer & chicks with some diving thrown in - Sharm is great!
