Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics Blu-ray is the best bet. Its the one i got and it does help quite a bit on setting it up. It explains all the test patterns and how to use them correctly.

I'd also been looking for a 42" screen & the 42X10 was at the top of my list, however having recently seen a LG 42PQ6000 I'm reconsidering my choice.
Having seen them together in the shop I prefered the image on the LG although thats subject to how the shop have them set up. We've a toddler in the house and I'm thinking the LG screen may be that bit more toddler friendly than the Panny.
Current TV is a Panny (crt) and it's been great, thats what had drawn me origally to the 42X10.

The build quality on the Pana should be bit better, I'd also warrant the blacks are a bit deeper as well. You can't really judge plasmas under shop lights fairly though, 9/10 the LCD will look the dogs in the shops (yes I know that LG is plasma, but as you say it was probably setup with max brightness/contrast on); it's when you get it home that you realise the back light causes the blacks to appear washed out and especially poor contrast in dark scenes.

General advice: Unless you are going to have a LOT of still images on a TV I'd go for a plasma every time. Also Panasonic are renowned for excellent customer support, I've known them to replace sets that are a year out of warranty.

Bit the bullet and purchased the 42X10 for £619. Paid an additional £61.90 (10% of purchase price) for 5 years guarantee that covers everything minus fire/flood dropping it etc. We'll use the money we have saved towards other house stuff. Perhaps a blu-ray player at some point too.

Saw a 103" panasonic 1080p tv too in curry's megastore - immense.... hefty price tag though at £69,000!

I know you'll probably hear this all the time, but I'd personally shell out the extra cash and just grab a PS3. They're fantastic for Blu-Ray movies and for the added cash you get a games console as well :)

Congrats on your purchase by the way :)

I'm really stuck at the moment on whether to grab a PZ80 for around £800 or shell out the extra and get the G10 for around £950.

He already has an Xbox, and decent BR players are £140.

Yeah PZ80/82/85, or G10 would have been nice but a bit too much money for what we need right now. G10 did look very nice in action I must say....

Si, which Blu-ray player did you opt for in the end?

Interesting thread. I'm in the market for a new TV, looking for something to replace my trusty 28" JVC CRT :)

I'm particularly taken by the Panny 42PZ80 and from what I've read on various sites, my choice is justified.

Am I right in thinking that the PZ80's resolution is 1920x1080 whereas the PX80 is 1024x768?

Yup :)

Although have a look at panasonics latest screens, as those are last years models. Their were some amazing deals on them, but the latest screens are very well priced now too. Check out the x10.

If you have a John Lewis near by they will be pretty much guaranteed to have one on show. :)

do i need to change my ps3 and sky hd settings to go with the 720p that the 42x10 has , my old lcd was 1080 so should i change the ps3 settings and my sky hd box settings to 720 ? sorry for the stupid question if it is that

Yes, it's always preferable for your sources to output at the screens native res. Unless the scalers in the TV are better than the source, which is unlikely unless you own a Pioneer and some naff DVD player. Otherwise you get lots of horrible scaling artefacts.

In short, change everything to 720p. :p

1080i is actually better for Sky HD since thats what they broadcast all their HD content in. On my PX80 (similar to the X10), Auto on Sky HD makes SD stuff look bad, but on 1080i it looks fine.

Again depends which deinterlacer is better. TV or the sky box.

For example, the TX-P42X10? Isn't that *only* 720?
