Australia trips

I took 3 months to hitch hike up the coast of queensland from brisbane to just past cairns.

Sounds like quite a budget you have and nothing like what i had! Although i did do a day trip to the reef. I took it at port douglas (Port douglas is both closer to the reef and cheaper to do, not to mention it being a nicer place than cairns). I went with a company called wavelength who take small groups of people at a time so you have a really personal experience with them. Some of the tours take giant boats crammed with tourists and i cant imagine it being an enjoyable day with them. I was also lucky enough to see hump back whales diving around on the way out there! it was absolutely spectacular. The tour guide said it was the best display he'd ever seen. We managed to get within about 50m of them diving (SPLASHES!) and they even swam under and around our boat! we were actually a few meters from them at some points. It was a small family (mum, dad and baby). they travel up to the east coast of queensland to breed in the Australian winter (our summer) so keep your eyes peeled. The other tour boats tried to get in on the experience but their boats were too large and couldn't risk manouvering that close to them.

On the same day i got to snorkel with giant turtles and reef sharks and of course the coral but it couldn't have been a better day. It was so wonderful. I'd highly recomend Wavelengths (they actually do pick ups from cairns).

As for the rest of the trip, i could tell you a million things! But from south to north, here are a few places that are definetly worth seeing (look them up):

Noosa heads
Rainbow beach
Fraser island (walk to lake mckenzie. It is actually paradise )
1770 and agnes waters
Eungella national park (platypus!)
Cape hillsborough
Townsville is rubbish
Mount Bartlefrere
The atherton tablelands
Port douglas
Mossman gorge

Theres a million other places but I'm sure they're pretty much inaccessible unless you have a 4x4 or are hitching :)

How can you say Cairns is a dump ?

But compared to a lot of places in australia it is a dump. the only nice part is that outdoor swimming pool and even then it over crowded. Cairns just doesnt feel very nice, it doesnt do australia any justice. To see australia you need to see the national parks and coast line, not the cities. If you do want to see a great city, try brisbane :)

Oh and townsville is even worse than cairns.

edit, if you want to see the atherton table lands and daintree (which you actually can't see from cairns) I'd go stay in them. The table lands are absolutely beautiful. I climbed mount bartlefrere but unfortunately it was cloudy at the top! Still a great climb.

as I said, see the reef from port douglas.

Edit 2. If you do hire a car, please pick up hitch hikers!

Quicksilver reef tour

Quicksilver is the largest tour operator there is. I wouldn't reccomend them. read my frist post :)

If townsville and Cairns is anything like Darwin then you probably cant swim any where other then pools or selected swimming ponds because of the Jellyfish, Crocodiles and other things that kill you in the water :p

There's plenty of crocs up that way and there's cassowaries up there too so you're ****ed in water and on land :D

Just noticed that you wanted to go from Adelaide to Cairns - Unfortunatly they don't have a location in Adelaide, but what I'd recommend doing is getting the van from
Melbourne - driving to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road - Then from Adelaide to Canberra through some of the outback - Canberra to Sydney - Sydney up the east coast

The advantage of doing the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelaide is that you're on the correct side of the road to see everything (Ocean on your left)

My rough plan, which is subject to complete change depending on the whims of the girlfriend (Who is already out there) after I land in Melbourne in just over a month is to drive to Adelaide via the Ocean Road. Not sure how long I need to do this, thinking 2-3 days, there are a couple of hostels en-route. Then a few days in Adelaide itself as it looks like a beautiful city. Then explore the valleys nearby. Then drive back to Melbourne inland (For years and years now I've wanted to stand in the middle of a completely straight road and see nothing for miles around and both directions of the road simply blending into the horizon - weird but there we go!), and head to Sydney via some National Parks, Bathurst and the Blue Mountains. Then from Sydney its up to Brisbane, the Gold Coast, before ending up in Cairns for a bit of Scuba Diving. After that I don't really know. I have a return flight on the 30th July but what I'd really like to do is get some sort of random job so I can afford to stay out there as long as possible, then fly back when we get bored.

Ace, you'll live that dream many, many times over here!

I really liked Adelaide, it's kind of quiet but had a good vibe about it. Enjoy your holiday, it's a great country for road tripping!

Went to sydney. Bridge Climbed - very good.

I thought that was too expensive for what it was tbh.

Just got back from Mel/Syd - Luckily my brother lives in the Blue Mountains so we had a few days there.

If you are going to melbourne, Philip Island is pretty good, wouldn't go back to Melbourne though after being there once.

Haven't been up north east, but plenty of time in the future to do that.

Always park in the direction of traffic.

Whats wrong with Melbourne?

The Neighbours. :p

I'm planning a trip to Australia, New Zealand and Japan next year. So far I've got about seven weeks holiday time saved up for it.

I was in Cairns in November, just into stinger season and they have stinger nets out every so often along the coast to give you safe places to swim, but you're right about the crocs, there was a spotting of one on the news nearly every night.

Fox: shame you aren't going further up the east coast right into the Daintree, I spent a few nights there and being in the middle of the rainforest is unlike anywhere else I've been (although very very hot and humid). It's quite funny when you drive into Cape Tribulation and the road just becomes dirt track, they advise you not to proceed unless you're in a 4x4 and the sign post says 120km to Cooktown.

I am taking about £2600 and I am staying for at least just under 6 weeks.

-Blue Mountains in Sydney, just a day trip
-Uluru, must include transport from Cairns (although this can be booked separately)
-Diving on GB Reef, just a day trip probably although a few days live aboard would be awesome
-Few days sailing in the Whitsundays

I did a combined whitsundays and fraiser island trip, both were amazing. Diving in cairnes is very cheap if you look around. Its actually cheaer to do your PADI open water course in cairnes than it is in Thailand!
2 nights self guided on fraiser and 2 days one night on Siska doing whitsundays was about £400

Blue mountains wasnt that great really, id rather spend money on some other better tour/trip

If you have chance to go to the town of 1770 (Agnes water) then there is a wreck dive quite near there. Its supposed to be the best part of the reef because not that many people have dived it so its not died like the other touristy arts of the reef. (Think it might be the Karma wreck dive)

Nothing 'wrong' with it, just not much to do there in comparison to Sydney. Melbourne can be done in a couple of days (esp the city) Crowne Casino is good if you can get there - in the city.

Didn't do the Great Ocean Road trip so can't comment on that.

Plus the weather is changeable, if you like UK you'll like Melbourne ;)
