Transport for London has announced a six month trial of a full ISA system in over 30 of their vehicles in London this sumer.

What is ISA? I hear you ask.

Well it is a system where by the vehicle you are driving knows what the speed limit is on the road you are on, and will physically limit the vehicles speed to never go over the speed limit. If for instance you go from a 40 to a 30 limit the vehicle will automatically slow down to the new limit and no matter what you do with the accelerator it will not exceed the limit.

Link here to TFL website.

Link here to Daily Mail report on it as well.

Imagine for what ever reason you NEEDED to accelerate away to avoid something at a certain angle.
Rare....but just imagine.
*Press* ...Noooo!

Anyway, I don't like it but if it enforces the rules, well, can't really argue that.

Interesting system however, I know it's a long shot but needing some sort of chip in your license to even start a car (or) a system to prevent repeat offenders getting back in a car and being able to speed.

There should be preventatives for those who've shown they can not be trusted, the rest of us get the benefit?

It's just, it would take year sand year to implements and some cars would need upgrading and it may not even work on others, people still drive around 40 year old + cars. I do.

Looks like they have an override button.

Non-story in that case?

Only fitted to the trial vehicles though.

We have been doing several months of pre trial off public road testing around our tracks here at Millbrook, getting the system to work well. We recommended the override button, as a fail safe in case of the need to accelerate out of trouble.

If, or most likely, as and when the system becomes fully fitted to production vehicles, the override button will be removed from the system and there will be no way of switching the system off. We have five vehicles being tested like that at the moment, to make sure the system is foolproof, and that there is no way of bypassing the system.

Sounds like very bad news to me. and yes that is me saying that I completely disagree with many of the speed limits on our roads today. Not all, but there's plenty that I break every day and i've not crashed like plenty of the grannies that stick well below them.

I don't like the sinister suggestion that it tracks "driver behaviour" :( Don't like the idea of this at all. NuLab will love this sort of thing I'm guessing, so the solution is to vote them out :)

This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard on something like this... arrogance and stupidity.

your posting in the wrong foum if you think that.

There are plenty of occasions when breaking the speed limit is perfectly safe. Equally, there are plenty of occasions when doing the speed limit is simply not suitable

There are plenty of tight winding narrow country lanes that are covered by a 60 limit. But you'd never dream of doing 60mph round the blind corners as the chances that somebody could come crashing into because they're so narrow, is very large.

Drivers should think for themselves what is a suitable speed for their vehicle, and not let some box in the car pull information from a satellite to decide whats best.

This is never going to end up on production general-public vehicles, so I don't really care if buses have it.

i have to say i'd love it if my car had an optional one of these fitted (optional in that it was like cruise control could be engaged/turned off) sometimes driving through london there are so many changes in speed. Just yesterday driving into Bow/Mile End i went from a 70, to 60 to 40 to 50 in the space of 4 miles. I'm quite capable of driving that manually, but sometimes you miss the signs when you're fighting for road space, and so it would sometimes be nice to not have to worry about it.

I'd quite like this as well.

I always thought this whole idea sounded sensible.

My only concern is that often i get stuck behind people who decide to go 20 in a 40 zone, to get past them the little time I break the speed limit is often useful. Not because a 20->40 difference isn't enough its just that as everyone knows if you are being overtaken you must accelerate.

If the system has some kind of 10second breaking the speed limit for every 10minute window to allow cleaner overtaking I would be all for it.

As a truck driver I can tell you that you wont like it at all.

btw.. Anyone else notice that speed limits are actually being reduced ?

Well... They are. Roads that used to be 40 are now 30. So why is it that now we have vehicles vastly superior to the ones around when the limit was set that they now... all of a sudden.. decide to lower the limit ?
