ATI, Bad Drivers?

I've never had any issues, but each team has specific driver nuances that I like.

I've just jumped from a 4870 to a GTX280, so I'm looking forward to having individual game profiles again!

Well i hate to be one of the few but yes i did have the problem the op is having after i switched from my 7800gtx to my X2. I did the whole control panel and driver sweeper thing but it missed some obscure file sorry cannot remember what it was called but it wasn't anywhere i would have expected to find it or thought it would cause a problem. I did a full clean install of vista (yeah i know pain in the backside) and touch wood it has been plain sailing since. So if nothing else do a clean install and that should sort it for you i have to say personally apart from that one hiccup which was my fault as i was being lazy and didn't want to do a fresh install i have had no problems with the Ati drivers.

I've jumped from nvidia to ATI and back countless times...never had issue with either. All I ever did was uninstall from the control panel, reboot and install new drivers.

well I use AMD/ATI cards as you can see...awsome card only a few minoir driver problem

Both are the same, everytime a new driver comes out from both parties, theres always people posting, 'going back to previous as these do this/that etc...', just the trouble with ATi's threads is, they have about 3+ of those threads before Nvidia have even one, as they release more drivers.

If Nvidia did a driver every month, then they to would have a thread every month full of people saying 'these are cack, so im going back to previous' just like ATi.

If you don't want any driver problems, then all you can do is get a console.

Bought a Powercolour HD 4890 1GB card just recently, the stock drivers on the disc that came with the card give far, far better performance than any of the other three drivers I've tried.

Rule #1 in software design:

The weakest component is always the user. 95% of problems are due to failures by the biological unit as my lecturer used to say.

Well i always find it is better to actually find a fault and sort it then assume what might be the cause of it we were always trained in the saying "assumption is the mother of all XXXX up's". Either way a clean install every now and then has never been known to hurt any pc so best and easiest thing to do to rule out any chance of driver conflicts from old to new components.

Another case of "user error" with ATI drivers eh? :p

The only suggested solution I've seen people post is a fresh install of Windows, please explain how installing the drivers on a fresh install as opposed to installing them on an old install is a reflection on the users ability? it sounds more like a buggy installation procedure to me.

If ATI owners put as much effort into helping the OP try to fix it (without drastic measures such as a format) instead of putting all their effort into defending the drivers tooth and nail there might be less posts like this in the future.

I don't think you should have to do a clean install of your OS everytime you switch gpu. Surely to jaysus you don't have to do this?

Or do you now?

One major problem with your Post Its not that the OP is having problems with upgrading ATI drivers. The problem is that the NV drivers have not fully un installed.

So who's fault is that again NV..
mmj_uk Big foot with a shotgun. Maybe you pro NV users should help him clean them out.
You have no idea of the history of his setup or OS install & what wonders a users can do to an install over time.

And if the pro Nv users did not all steam in here then there would not be any need for defending.

I see plenty of NV threads with people having issues every time a new driver comes out & in general the ATI users leave them alone.

Some of you got a complex because if you really thought you truly had the better then you would not feel the need to try make the other look worse.

Fixed. ;)

Let's face it, the code monkey is just as fallible as the end user...
