HELP! Friend just spilled drink on their laptop

Just thought Id chime in with my 2 cents.

If its a SATA hard drive in the laptop you can just hook it to the SATA connections in your PC.

If its an older IDE connection you will need an adaptor that turn large IDE into small IDE. Or get an external hard drive caddy for a 2.5" IDE drive.

nice.. hope you/your friend killed all power asap. and the drink wasnt too sugary because that stuff crystalises..

my lattitude laptop absorbed a whole mug of coffee via the keyboard a while back. dell replaced pretty much everything, keyboard, motherboard, processor, memory and half the plastics for some reason..

luckily we always have lattitudes kicking around at work so i popped the drive into another one while it was away for repair :)

I bet this happens a lot at uni to be honest! My keyboard has had some near misses thanks to various mates, I tend to lock my door after a night out now so nobody can go near! Hehe

Thanks for all the advice.

I took the HDD's out last night and we went into uni to the computer services guys, had to wait an hour for them to connect them up to a PC with a (as others suggested) standard HDD enclosure as it turned out, just something I don't have. The hard drives survived the spillage anyway so the coursework is safe!

Apprarently when the drink was spilled, the laptop powered itself off so I'm a little concerned about a short circuit. Toshiba will be having a look at it anyways.

Oooooh thats not a good sign that it turned off :S

Perhaps it has a spill shutdown procedure when it detects moisture! :P

An hour? christ.

lol the first response was (after sucking in air through his teeth) "might be able to fit it in by the end of the day". It's like taking your car to the garage .

Not sure if the insurance covers a spillage, the laptop might just have to accidently fall down the stairs otherwise....

my dell powered itself off, probably where all the liquid shorted everything out... lol

would be the same in this case too to be honest.

Depends on your insurance policy. I took out the extra cover on mine so any user inflicted damage on my PC or laptop would be covered. God knows what I could do to damage either. I never put drinks near anything electrical.
