Venting my Spleen

I've just got back from work. While walking back from the train station I had to walk past some housing association properties, which have been built just around the corner from where I live. As usual, they had their usual assortment of unpleasant people scattered around them.

While walking past someone who was swearing at his child while getting out of his car, he coughed without covering his mouth, sending a fine covering of spittle across my cheek.

After passing him, I reached a point where the pavement narrowed and had a brick wall on one side, and cars parked on the other, barely enough room for two people to squeeze through.

As I was walking through the narrowed section of pavement, another equally unpleasant individual was walking towards me with his girlfriend by his side. I moved as far to the side as possible (to allow them to get past me in single file), however in an attempt to intimidate me into moving further across (which I couldn't), he started making very loud spitting noises and spitting in front of him/onto the cars parked by the pavement.

I stood my ground, but it really irritated me that he felt that he had the right to do this to me. He ended up moving when he realised that I wasn't prepared to be intimidated, but I found the spitting highly offensive and completely unnecessary. What could I have done in this situation to put him in his place, without risking getting attacked or arrested by the police. The individual in question lives on a street adjacent to where I live in a housing association property

What irritates me more is that people refuse to admit that there is a direct corellation between people who live in council houses, are on benefits, or who simply don't achieve in life and unpleasant behaviour. In my experience of having lived close to both respectable hard working people who have achieved something in life (have mortgages etc), and housing association types, there is a marked difference when walking past them or their houses.

When I was at school, I was insulated from all the people who didn't want to try by being in higher sets than them, yet it would seem that despite earning £27 K a year (which isn't great, but should still keep me out of the gutter), I have to encounter people of a similar ilk on an almost daily basis! My girlfriend is currently a student nurse, so with mortgage repayments, council tax etc we really have to watch what we spend.

To add further insult to injury, today I received a letter addressed directly to me from an organisation called Warm Front. In this letter they stated that if I was in receipt of benefits, I could be entitled for up to £4,000 in grants to upgrade my central heating system.

Our central heating system does need upgrading, but because I am a hard working tax payer, it would seem that I am not entitled to such a grant.

This country has gone mad, the people who don’t work/don’t try hard don’t seem to have much of a difference in quality of life to people like myself who do. The only real difference I can see is that they will never be mortgage/rent free and drive slightly older cars!!

Please note, that I realise that there are respectable people who live in council/housing association properties, or don't earn very much money. However, there is certainly a link between people who fit the criteria mentioned above and the culture of disrespect/unpleasant behaviour which is invading this country.

There are idiots who live in big houses too. The number of people living in council housing just happens to be far higher so it looks like there's a higher ratio of idiots living in them.

Anything for a good old class war though.

Well I sussed it. He obviously has a tiny penis. And too make him look manly due to his lacking down below he needs to spit to re-enforce his manhood.

I completely agree with the OP.

KNIVES - "more people live in council houses"? A joke I presume? Who pays for the council houses and their upkeep, as well as all their benefits? The tax payer.
If there are more council houses than privately owned/privately rented non-state benefit reliant properties, the system would not work.

Moses99p - I presume a joke? See here: http://humor.about.com/c/ht/00/07/How_Tell_Joke0962934294.htm

Tim - Use a dictionary or read more.

The amount of jokes in reply I hope have lead the OP to realise that General Discussion is no place for sensible discussion. You could try Speakers Corner, but then they would somehow turn this into a race/religious thread.

I earn a decent salary and was equally shocked when I was looking at quite highly priced properties and being shown places in council estates where my neighbours would benefit seekers and living in their property for free! Considering the effort i put in to get where I am, I really did not consider that fair.

As for the grant - tell me about it. Give the money to young families as well, who require such things not just unemployed people.

I do think the system is ridiculous. Social mobility is what council housing is trying to stimulate, however I think it too often breeds crime, laziness and a culture that fuels the pages of tabloids like The Express and the Sun. Council towers should be knocked down, council estates limited in size, and then dispersed across the country.

The behavious you saw today was shocking and if it were me I'd be equally enraged.

I live in a council estate, in east London, it really isn't as bad as what you described, when confronted with a situation like that, showing confidence is the only way to avoid this kind of behaviour from the scum.

TBH you sound a bit like an elitist middle class ponce. Sorry.

I've lived in a flat (private rent) that was part of a council estate for the last 5 years. The only things of note have been that a gun was fired nearby (not on the estate) and there used to be dealers downstairs, but they moved on in less than 2 weeks. Yea there is a lot of shouting and you hear the parents swear a lot, but most people are pretty polite. This might not be such a bad area though.

We're looking to upgrade our central heating as well. The boiler needs replacing and we currently only have central heating downstairs so would like to get it installed upstairs as well. It's going to cost a fortune so we were also a bit annoyed to receive a leaflet similar to yours.

£4k would get the whole thing done (with v.little change!) but as it is we'll have to save up for a while instead whilst hoping the guys don't put their prices up too much in 6-12 months time.
