Buying an MX5 - Price Check

Find one on sale that isn't abused and i'll buy.

Seriously put up a link and i'll go for it. :)

I've seen one unmolested FI NA (i.e no stupid bodykit) for under £4k and it was a good few months ago. Another is a BBR in cornwall which is 300 miles away :(

Your criteria doesn't make much sense to me. You seem to want something totally standard that hasn't been used in anger, or something FI but with no exterior changes. MX5's are not fragile motors, they're very robust and actually benefit from "a redline a day to keep the coke away" :p I've seen more damage from cars coking up, typically too little abuse. MX5's aren't the same as say perfomance BMW's in the way they need to be looked after.

Also it is getting increasingly rare to find 5's in stock trim, this isn't a bad thing though. If you don't like any exterior mods, in the majority of cases it will be easy to remove and sell on quite easily. OEM parts are cheap and plentiful, so you may be able to make money from any modifications you don't like.

There is a difference between abused and driven.

What's hard to understand about wanting a clean looking original car?

Just had a quick browse and there's plenty out there WAY cheaper to choose from.

What's wrong with something like this:

Replace the rear lights with stock items and it's good to go. £1k cheaper and recent roof, tasteful and useful mods (the Larini exhaust is very nice), UK so cheaper insurance (unless you desperately want a LSD). Just got to travel slightly :p

Or http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1002823.htm If you want an original unfettled car.

59k miles on the clock, Recent mohair roof with lots of extras including leather and the same person has owned it for the last 8 years. Can't get much more unfettled than that and it's way cheaper, probably haggle it down a bit more as well.

I really wouldn't get too hung up on this one, plenty more out there.

Thanks for digging a few up, there not bad to be honest and i may well go and have a look.

It really doesn't sound like you would be willing to walk away though!

Heart vs Head, but i know what you mean, I've been looking at so many when you see a nice one it's easy to get caught up.

I think i'm still gonna have a poke round but won't go above £3k, i'm not interested in the Mk2 as it doesn't do anything for me looks wise, although i'm sure its a great car, so is a 5 series and both leave me cold.

Gonna look at several the last weekend in may ranging from 1991 Eunos V spec to 1996 UK dakar.

OEM Carbon/Kevlar Recaro Bucket Seats - These seats are delicious though, and fetch a heavy premium.

I know they attract a premium but what do they go for?

I mean if i was to sell them on MM today would you guys buy and how much for?

Before i forget,

Ive looked at dozens on NA MX5s recently and done the usual checking for rust, but has someone got any pictures of the drainage holes and any other places i should be looking. I've heard brake lines are prone to rust and can be pricey (in comparison to the car) if they are all crapped up.

Cheers for the help so far, much appreciated.

No it's not. :)

Whoops didn't scroll down sorry. :)

Brake lines are easy to sort yourself and bend into shape by hand. I did the Dolomites rear axle for £10 from memory. Just bought the pipe and then took it to a local garage to put the ends onto the pipes. So I wouldn't be put off by that.

For those seats, I'd expect £200 at least.

Meh, just go a view some, get a cheap one as its good fun mending and fiddling with things!

Mine was only £1300 and its been great :)

Yeah i know they are very fun, my mates got one and i've test driven several.

In all honesty would rather spend 2.5k-3k on one which is a bit different i.e. R Ltd or RS ltd or one with s/s exhaust and coil overs w/ poly bushes done recently as I'm planning on doing it anyway. :)

You need all of 25 posts to PM (which i have as of a few days ago):p

It is very nice, but it will need new shocks/springs and the bushes as well, billys are a rough ride anyway, let alone 100k and a few trips on the ring.

I've seen some other nice ones, thanks for helping me be more objective guys, will still make an offer, but £3k is absolute top end considering it needs £500 spent on it from the get go.
