STS-125 Shuttle Mission to Service Hubble Space Telescope Launches on Monday 7pm

I;ve never actually watched this stuff live before.

I'm surprised by the interest actually, are you guys keen astronomers, cosmologists?

Not me. I just love looking at the sky at night, have interest in the Space Program (and all the cool technology they've developed to support it), and really love the data that we're receiving from the HST.

I suppose it's just a certain geeky interest in space and technology, I find it fascinating to see what they are doing/exploring while at the same time not understanding all of whats going on.

I have an exam on cosmology in 3 weeks time,

When you have to get through the hard maths of general relativity, it no longer seems that cool lol.

Hopefully there will be more pretty pictures.

Is that a trick question? I thought the cosmological constant was Einstein's biggest blunder? Or was it applied to Quantum mechanics? I cant remember.

Its not, you can add a constant (multiplied by the metric) as the most general solution because the covariant derivative of the metric is zero.

Einstein called it his biggest blunder but looks like its popping up again to explain the dark vacuum energy which is dominating the universe.

Significant (though not extensive) tile damage has been found on Atlantis, caused by an event just after 100 seconds into launch. The current view seems to be that it's significant enough to warrant further investigation, but the damage appears to be shallow and is in an area that is well protected. It is thus unlikely to have any detrimental effect on the mission (or on landing).

Press conference in 15 minutes (on NASA TV) should offer more details.
