As of today my car seems no more, my 11year old 1.25 fiesta finally give up. As i started the car my petrol powered car sounded like a diesel, the acceleration was more shocking than usual, car then struggled to go into gear, then it give up and wont start. There is also now a nice knocking noise when i try and turn the car on like something has broken up in the engine.

Anway, I have been wanting to get a new car for some time now anyway, so it looks like someone has made my mind up for me.
I will be looking to spend around 10k or under, the cars I have been looking at are:

Suburu WR1 - I would have liked one of these but because this car has died i dont want to be paying out running this day to day, as a second car it was feasible but not as my only car

Focus ST - these seem like nice cars and looks like you get a lot for the money, good looking, quite quick. Its a ford so servicing probably wont be expensive nor will the general running of the car.

So you can see the sort of cars im looking at, something realitivly quick, and nice looking. Anyone got any other ideas for that sort of price range?

Need more info. How much do you drive, do you comute, do you want comfort, do you want speed, do you want both, do you need economy, do you want powar, etc etc etc

£10k buys you an exceptionally wide range of cars, from something new small and slow, to something older and epic quick...

What makes you think the WR1 is going to be a problem as an only car ? I was in the same predicament as yourself and was looking at ST's. The Subaru only costs a shade more to run to be honest and IMO is a lot more fun. Subaru’s are very reliable cars and only have bad reps because of the amount of people that do silly things to them and then blow them up

I drive around 150miles per week on average
I only drive 5miles to work, which is 2 days 1 week then 5 the next and so on, and i share lifts
Economy wise i dont want something thats going to give me under 20 around town, an average of around 25+mpg would be good, but if i found a car i would work it out with petrol prices/tank sizes ect. So not an over concern but still i dont want really crap mpg. But im also open to suggestions and if the car is say 7-8k i would be willing to sacrafise mpg. If you know what i mean
Yes i want power, i want something quite quick

Any ideas how much an WR1 would cost a year to run? based on 7-8k a year driving?

Also the reason why im sort of straying away from the WR1 is because they cost 13k+ and thats a bit more than iw ant to spend at the minute.

Is the Fez the only car you have had?

Have you had much experience of "quick" cars and run some quotes for them insurance/running cost wise, going to be a bit of a step up...? Running a Subaru wont be the cheapest experience... I hear they have a habit of opening your wallet for modifications too!

Im only asking as you might go to view one and get carried away with it and buy something then regret it as its a lemon or you have other problems....

No fiesta is not the first car ive had, certainly hanv't owned anything as quick as a scooby.
Yeh have had experience with a quick car before, have driven a 300bhp+ evo 2 in the past, only car if i had thats even remotely nippy is a 306 gti-6 and that nothing compared to a scooby. If it helps i will have around 700 a month after everything is payed out and ive saved etc this would be for the loan and running costs.
Yeh had a quote on a wr1 for £900 fully comp, so insurence is pretty decent.

Nitro - best thing to do is test drive some cars.

Yes that would be a good idea, how would i go about testing a second hand scoob. Could I just find one in a garage and just ask for a test drive?
I could probably test drive a focus as my uncle has just bought one.

I'm sure there are some garages that have scoobs for sale which you'll be able to test drive.

There's plenty about for less than 10k especially if you look at the older generation ones.

Will be a step above a scooby in terms on class, build quality etc, less of a hooligan than the scooby too so insurance should be less

I'd go for a post facelift Focus ST if you can, I drove one recently and really enjoyed it. Could drive it sensibly and could hoon it, good looking, good interior and dash and a nice size car. Running the Ford should be a lot cheaper than a Impreza and theres plenty you can do for very little money to get it from 225bhp up to 280-300bhp.

I thought this but there is very little in it to be honest .... Fuel consumption is a little worse in the subaru but the Focus still see's around 25 mpg town figures and apart from that i cant see discs / pads and servicing costs being all that diffrent :)

The Focus ST is a great car but when you look into it there not as cheap to run as you would think ...

Going to have to get a quote on all these cars and work out the petrol costs and then try and fine one to test drive, at least i can compare 1 to the other then in terms of running costs.

I would assume with it being a (fast) Ford that running costs would be far less than a Scooby, parts going wrong, servicing, tyres, pads, discs and insurance.

I can't believe it costs the same to run a Focus ST as it does an Impreza. I was always under the impression those fast Impreza's had running costs almost equal to the fast BMW's (Read: M3's, 335i's, 530i's Z4's, 6 series etc....) where as a Focus ST was basically 2.0 Focus running costs in terms of servicing, pads, discs with obviously insurance and fuel being more and tyres being the same but required more often.
